Fireplace + Mantle Design

The previous owners had a large piece of laminate wood all over the fireplace, at one point it was all stone, but when they converted it to gas the stone had to go. Now we are left with a bunch of uneven adhesive all over the fireplace and walls.

We've stripped the paint off the hearth and would like to keep it, but are stumped at what to do with the rest of the fireplace. If we had the money we'd love to purchase more stone and continue the same look all the way to the ceiling, but that is a bit out of budget right now.

Any advice? We've been throwing around ideas using stained wood paneling, wood slats, DIY-ing the stonework, re-doing the drywall...

Our house was built in 1963, and our style is mid-century rustic, with mostly teak furniture and doors, with a light honey wood floor.
