Walnut top-oil & waterlox compared/pics/color difference?
Comments (41)One of the woodworkers that was mentioned on another thread uses this Sherwin Williams Lacquer... Thoughts? It comes in dull rub. Here's part of an email he sent to me. (This surface is not for cutting on) "" It is used for restaurant tables, counter tops and islands where the primary use is for service purposes and not for direct cutting. It is available in matt or what sherwin calls dull rub, semi gloss and gloss. 99% of all our blocks using a hard surface finish use the dull rub laquer. The catalyst adds hardness. It is water and stain resistant like waterlox but unlike waterlox it is hard and clear. Waterlox yellows the block. Most people who have hard surface finishes use a cutting matt or block and store it under the top or in a drawer. " Sounds good. I wonder how it wears and also if you can do small repairs by sanding and refinished or if you'd have to do the whole top. I'll call again next week. Maybe I can get a sample piece. I like that it comes in dull rub and supposedly doesn't yellow the block. Comments (8)Donho- I'm NOT going to ask the obvious question that you're prolly SICK of getting asked... like in the scene from "Office Space" where the "Bobs" are interviewing Michael and they ask him... "So..... are ya related?"... HA! Anyways - back to topic... What YOU are experiencing is the exact reason why for almost a decade I was a crusader against doing honed Absolute Black - for that very reason. I did three kitchens all at the same time - for the same client. He built three spec homes, and we did honed AB in all three, and they had the same exact issue that you are having. In fact - I was on my way up to Scottsdale on a bright sunny Tuesday morning to look over the work and listen to his complaint when the meeting was postponed in light of the events that taken place earlier that morning in New York, Washington & Pennsylvania - the date that day - was September 11th, 2001... You always remember what you were doing and where you were when events like that happen - President Kennedy's assassination , Neil Armstrong on the Moon, Challenger Blowing up, President Reagan getting shot, etc - I was going to look at "what the heck my customer was supposed to do about ALL THREE of his kitchens that had honed AB in them" on the morning of 9/11.... Anyways - there IS good news for you on your problem - and in my opinion - NEITHER an enhancer nor a sealer is going to help you in this situation - I have tried both without a great deal of success on Honed AB...... HOWEVER................. You CAN use Method Daily Granite Polish - it is ALL NATURAL and you apply it every day for around two weeks - after which time - you will have built up a "patina" of coconut oil - the active ingredient that will help to prevent the natural oils in your fingers from showing up on the stone and creating the smudges... MANY people have found that Method Daily Granite Polish DOES work in this situation!!!! I learned about this technique right her on GW from some of the home owners that had the VERY SAME problem tha you have!!!! try it....... hth kevin...See MoreAre any soapstone dry wax products without Walnut oil available?
Comments (9)On walnuts: when my son was young he was allergic to peanuts, they gave him hives. One Christmas season I was cracking walnuts while he was sitting on the other side of the peninsula and he began wheezing as I was cracking. The wheezing wasn't new, he had asthma, but the direct cause that time was the walnuts. The good news is that he outgrew his allergies to peanuts, eggs, and corn by the time he was 7. (The egg allergy was keeping him from getting some immunizations, which was a pain for school purposes, so the allergist sent out blood tests and when they came back clear he vaccinated the kid. He made us stay in the office for 3 hours, but all was well.) My point is that I think you're wise to avoid a walnut based product under the circumstances....See MoreMineral Oil on Honed Granite ala Soapstone? (stonegirl??)
Comments (15)Thanks everyone for some interesting points and tangents. That is what 's great about this forum. Real experiences by people who are smart about what they say. It still amazes me how much misinformation I get from the "experts" in the field. As to your post, vrjames: given that it is the oils on one's hands that causes the fingerprints, I am assuming (just theorizing) that coating the stone with mineral oil will simply pre-empt the finger oil. By staining the entire stone, it won't show subsequent stains. PS I actually like the old Atari games. I mean, I understand that technology is great, and we've made incredible strides just in my lifetime, and we're better off than our grandparents in so many ways, etc., but I'm still kind of partial to simple materials, like wood and stone, and simple solutions like a little bit of oil and some elbow grease....See MoreLusik
