Firsthouse mp-My living room is such that the zippper won't really be a problem. My sectional is a little pricier because I am getting an additional armless chair to add to the sectional (one side will be a seat longer than polly's). I think her configuration is a couple hundred dollars less. And wait for Penney's sales! Right now (till Sunday they told me-today) it is 15% off and I'd ask about the additional 10% opening a Penney's card. The site is not showing the additional 15% off. Macy's has a very similar looking new sectional called "lucie". It is even less expensive, but at this time does not have extra slipcovers for purchase. I can't immagine they wouldn't down the road but I didn't want to take a chance. Thanks for the guide with color. I love edgecomb gray. This is the color I would have done with the natural colored slipcover, but unfortunately it doesn't look great held up to khaki-or maby it does and I'm being too matchy matchy. Although I know things can blend if the right colors are incorporated. I have a color called Camoflouge up and I didn't think I'd like it being that it has a green tone but it looks great with the hardwoods and the khaki. Hhhmm. I ordered it on Wed (was that the 16th?) and it is coming the following week on Thurs. So about one week. Thanks again for the suggestions!

Prewash & dry the fabric a couple times, it can continue to shrink after just one time. When you iron the fabric try not to stretch it, i.e. don't iron across the bias. When I wash many yards of fabric I place the ironing board next to the bed so the excess can rest on the bed and not on the floor. Go with lighter weight fabric not heavy upholstery. If you have the time make a trial one first out of cheap muslin fabric before you proceed to more expensive fabric. For your first attempt at slipcovers maybe you shouldn't even attempt welting, that can make the layers so thick at the corners your machine may go out of alignment trying to sew it all together. I haven't made slipcovers but I've made quilted handbags with welting and it ruined my machine, even after service it's still not back to normal and I'll have to bring it back for more extensive and expensive repairs. You don't need to use a serger but you should at least overlock the seams with your sewing machine. I just had a pair of chair slipcovers made and the seamstress didn't use a serger or bother to overlock and the first time I washed it the seams unraveled something awful. I spent 2 hours angrily trimming them with scissors. Now I have to overlock it myself if I want to wash these again. The fabric (100% hemp) was heavy and prone to unravel. The other mistake she made was to make the slipcover too tight. I ripped seams trying to get it back on the chair. I hope you're comfortable sewing zippers too, a good slipcover will have a zipper. Nicole, your slipcovers look amazing! You must be an experience sewer. I'd like to try my hand at slipcovers one day but I think I'll start with an ottoman cover. ;-)

We are going through this with the Kivik right now. We had one with a white cotton cover but it was destroyed in the great fire/flood of '15. We went to replace it and found the white cover was quite different. I haven't tried to wash it yet, but I've noticed it catches grime much easier than the old cotton one. My DDs go to private school and wear white shirts. The old uniform shirts were cotton and you could get the stains out, but they were replaced with poly shirts that hold onto stains, so I'm not hopeful that the new poly Kivik cover will fare any better. It also doesn't feel as nice, but all the rest of our soft furnishings are natural fabrics, so I'm a bit biased.

I'm assuming you're a college student with no sex life - or perhaps you're hoping for some and realize that bedding has GOT to be washed! You talk about how you washed the down comforters and pillows and that they still smell. You have not mentioned how you dried them. Are you putting them through just one or two cycles of the dryer? If that is the case, what you are smelling is the fact that they didn't get dry and have "soured" - it smells something like sour milk. It can take multiple HOURS for a down comforter or pillow to dry! If you're using a laundromat, take plenty of change and a VERY engrossing book! Or you could just spend the money and take them to a cleaners and let them do all this for you. In the future, I highly recommend a duvet cover, pillow protector and cases. Anything else, is...well...frank, disgusting. Yes, I HAVE had a son and have 3 grandsons....
