Stone Fireplace--Adding a Mantel
Comments (10)Ok, so your stones go all the way up, however they don't protrude a lot like ours does, so it will be easier. Here is how he did it.... He cut a piece of 1/4 " thick paneling --several inches wide and the length we planned on making the mantle. Then he cut a small piece of wood (think of a piece of wood that is the size of a nail file, only thicker) and drilled a hole a few inches back in order to put a pencil through the hole. Hold up the paneling to the stone and run your small piece of wood (with the pencil in it) along the stone (this is the scribing part) and the pencil will be marking the paneling as it follows the stone...thus creating your pattern. Then cut the paneling following the pencil line and that's your pattern for wood that you're using for the mantle. In our fp, because the stone is so thick we had to do this twice, once for the top and once for the bottom. The bungee cords are acting as furniture clamps. Here is a shot of the hollow inside of the mantle The mantle is 3" thick... and due to the protruding stone, depending where it's measured -- it's 9 to 9 1/2 deep I have another photo -- of how we put the clamps on the Fp to instll the mantle, as soon as I locate it in the archives, I'll post it here....See MoreResale considerations for removing fireplace and adding luxury items
Comments (27)Best advise is to ask an expert in your town..but GENERALLY the three features you are debating do not add VALUE monetarily to a home. If they are there and if the buyer wants/likes them they will be one reason they make an offer on your home over the home two blocks over that does not have them, but they won't be offering substantially more because they are there!! The fireplace is tricky. For some reason it is a thing in the minds of so many Americans to want a fireplace. Wood burning are messy and much EFFORT, so they get very little use for many who said they wanted one. I grew up in many different states/homes and we had fireplaces in most of them. I have no memories of a fire being burned say on Christmas morning..or EVER. Gas fireplaces in a basement are fantastic, beautiful room heaters. Just the thing one needs to make the basement "livable" if your TV/family room is placed there. We live in zone 3/4 MN where winters are loooong and cold..and we do not use our wood burning fireplace very often. I find it BIZARRE when I read people in AZ/NM/ FL have a fireplace on their list of NEEDS for a home. WHY!?!? Ambiance is the only answer and seriously that NEED is for a very few times in a year. "Resale" is a factor if you move about a lot but you have to live in the home so choose for YOU and leave the rest....See MoreI need help with adding something to this wall!!?
Comments (8)I originally had the TV there but because my kitchen and dinning room is all open. It was a better view from the kitchen by the fireplace. I was hoping to add two chairs by that wall and maybe a gallery wall or maybe switch the couch?...See MoreHelp on deciding height of sconces and picture over fireplace, pls.
Comments (16)@Home Owner Thank you for your help!. Glad you like the sconces as we do, too. We are thinking the current painting is a bit small. So, perhaps rather than centering them horizontally between edge of small painting and edge of upper fireplace wall, we might move them over enough to the edge of the fireplace wall to accommodate a larger pic in the future. What height would you hang the fireplace picture. Would you centre that vertically from ceiling to top of mantel or a bit lower than centre. We do want to make sure we can place some items on the mantel. @calidesign Thanks for your input. The decision to put in a hearth was made years ago (this has been the longest DIY project in history - 9 years!) We prefer the more traditional look of a hearth vs the more modern look of no hearth. Even if we had changed our minds, the hardwood floor has been done and the height of the firebox was installed with a hearth in mind, and we are fine with these past decisons....See MoreKaitlyn Larson
