Do you guys Fertz in the late fall

I've gone ahead and have -reset- my double daffodil bed. Tahiti and Flower Parade. All 400+ bulbs and split the bulblets as well.

2 years in a Row. Tahiti has come up and bloomed fine.

Flower parade has come up with a bloom head but bud blast.

It was ALOT of #@## work but I dug them all out, reseated them and also split any bulblets as well. There was plenty of room on these bulbs....they were not -touching- each other aside from the bulblets that developed.

I don't know if this will help but this bud blast sucks...

Should I give it some fertz. starting mid-late fall when it starts to send roots down as another part of my -give it everything to mitigate approach-. Unless the simple answer is flower parade is just more sensative to uneven temp swings

I think that fertilizing bulbs works well when it is applied when they first start showing their sprouts in early spring. That is when their root systems are fully developed and there is less chance of burning new tender root tips that would be forming in the autumn. If you want to fertilize in the autumn put the fertilizer on top of the soil - if it is put in the hole under the bulb when planting it, it can do more harm than good.

I know there are folks here that don't ever fertilize bulbs and don't think it is necessary - my soil is a fertile sandy loam that drains well and most bulbous plants seem to love it. When I fertilize my bulbs it makes them bigger and stronger, with healthy foliage and larger flowers with more vivid and deeper colors.

Some double flowered daffodils are prone to bud blasting. I had the daffodil Golden Ducat in my garden and it rarely had flowers that opened normally. I don't know if the variety is one that is known for bud blast but after years of not impressing me it got yanked. Too wet or too dry soil conditions in the spring time will cause some varieties of daffs to blast.

Usually when I'm longing for spring, even in January, I can see sprouts just waiting to peek = they basically stop @ the mulch line. I just know about the timing - when putting down Fertz. Since it's organic - how long does it take to process and make it down to the root zone. I dunno if there is any benefit to doing a -fall- app as well as a spring app.

Heh. I was looking at past years when both of them bloomed and it's a showstopper for sure. It's only been lately that it's come up , with a bloom and never opening. One of those things where after a winter season, bulbs are the 1st thing I enjoy seeing. As simple as they are, my favorite are the crocus that come up 1st.

Dave, it can depend on what kind of fertilizer is used. In the spring, we wish our lawns to grow fast, to green up fast---the rain and snow-melt is in the soil so we don't have to apply moisture. If you fertilize with a fertilizer designed for fall application, then its said that you need not apply so much in the spring. Thats an up-in-the-air question. Generally though, low nitrogen fertilizer can be applied until well into fall. We don't want to encourage growth that will die the first time a heavy frost visits. So if you can time the application --go for it. I don't know what the applying in two phases does...one appliction should be sufficient. If it is a granular type, be sure to wash the granules off the grass by a low sprinkling of water over the lawn. If applying a water-soluble type, then the only thing to watch for is that it doesn't run off the lawn before being absorbed.

Hiya Pat! Good to hear from you:) I heard you had a little problem though, I'm very sorry about that and you're having a tough time getting around town now. I hope you can figure a way around that. I hope you're feeling ok and would love to see any pics you can manage to take. I even put up a statue that says the weeds are free to take:) Are you doing any crafts? I heard from Brenda, she said that her FIL is still having bad health problems and she has to be on the phone a lot and since she has dial up that means she needs to keep the line free. She said he dog's femur got broken and she's playing nurse and her DH is working though she's upset with him that it happened on his watch. He fell out of the back of the truck. She says she misses us though and she was worried about you, Pat.

With my potted Meyer Lemon that I leave outside during warm weather I've used blood meal with good success. Once when I up-potted it, I mixed a generous amount with the fresh potting mix; then the following year (last season) since I wasn't changing the pot I mulched it with BM. Both seasons the lemon did very well and I didn't need to add anything else (other than water of course). Previous to this I had been having difficulty meeting its needs, but this seemed to work perfectly. Here's what I found for BM's nutritional breakdown: nitrogen 13.25, phosphorus 1.00, potassium 0.60. I like it because it's naturally 'time-released'.

Thanks so much for your report, Patrick! That's just what I needed to hear. I've been eyeing those anulatas for a while now, wondering if they were worth acquiring, and feeling curious because she obviously likes the plant enough to keep more than one specimen. Now I have my answer and I'll pursue them post-haste! ^_~ I've been very interested in that sp. IV for quite some time now, opening the window and closing it again, hovering in indecision. I couldn't believe it when I saw it on sale. I love the leaves and just can't decide whether I ought to give up precious precious rigida/aff. rigida space for a different large leaf. ^_~ I thought it was so rockin that Joni acquired that set of plants (sp. IV among them) that TG only sells as a bundle of 10, because now we all have the benefit of getting to pick and choose our favorites amongst them. Ohh sweet-o!
