can I put a convection microwave in an Ikea microwave cabinet?
Comments (7)It depends on the model you're choosing...they come in all different sizes. How deep is the model you want, and how deep is the cabinet? I just bought a GE convection MW (countertop model, but it can be used w/ a trim kit), and I couldn't find anything in the documentation about how much clearance space to leave around it for venting (which I found strange! but who knows, I might have missed it). It did say to leave 3" clear in *front* of it, to protect against tipping...so do check the manual before you decide on that cabinet. And, if you don't mind, pretty please report your findings here...I'd love to know, myself! Thanks, Chris...See MoreInstalling cabinets, can I wait to install appliances?
Comments (14)Joseph Corlett hit the nail on the head. Choose your appliances in advance, but don't buy yet, and look at the specs carefully. Do not buy until near to installation. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that the clock starts ticking on the warranty upon delivery, not upon installation. If you buy your appliances too far in advance of installation, you will be foregoing one, two, or more months of your warranty. Since the warranty is built into the price of your appliance, it is like throwing away money to forego it. Furthermore, if you need a repair more than 12 months after delivery, but it's only been, say, 6 months in use, good luck on that expense - it will likely be high. P.S. Echoing what Anglophilia wrote, take extra care with the dimensions of the fridge. We have had a number of threads on this forum with people not realizing that their fridge is deeper than expected, and that it's sticking out from the cabinetry much more than they'd planned. Or, conversely, the cabinetry was made an inch or so too deep so that the fridge doors can't swing open fully....See MoreWhy Can't We Install a GE Speedcook Microwave Oven in Kitchen Island
Comments (8)Check the specifications for the different models. Some approve the installation, some don't. I asked about the difference from the salesperson, who explained some models are UL tested for installation undercounter but some aren't. It is likely due to the time and expense of testing, and possibly some models haven't made it out of the lengthy testing cycle yet. I'm not sure if this is accurate or not, but it's worth asking. Specifically, I was looking at a model that was one size, but the other size was undercounter approved...same internal workings, voltage, wattage, etc but a slightly different sized housing. It was confusing why, but there are models that are approved for your installation location....See MoreMicrowave drawer installed incorrectly in inset cabinets?
Comments (73)Nidnay - I remember reading this post at the start of building our new home over 2 years ago. Although I thought your microwave looked fine the way it was, I did like the inspiration photo that you showed. So I filed in my brain to be sure and have my microwave set back into the cabinetry because we also were getting inset cabinets. Guess what...I never gave it another thought!!! Now in our house for over a year and I saw this thread had popped up again. I had to go into my kitchen and see how my microwave drawer was placed. Well, apparently the position has never bothered me. 😁 PS - My dishwasher is on the opposite side, but within the bump-out area of my cabinets, It is inset into the cabinetry. When the dishwasher (Bosche) was first installed, it was sticking out like the microwave (I still cannot believe that I have never noticed 😀.) I had my builder set the dishwasher into the cabinetry....See MoreM
