Comments (5)That's looking a lot like downy mildew. Look under leaves for signs of black/white moldy looking spots that may be present on some of the leaves. Avoid overhead/spray irrigation in the future if you're doing that currently. It's one of those things that you can't take care of easily once it's shown up...you have to be preventative and lower risk before it shows up....See MoreI think I lost ALL my seedlings last night...
Comments (35)It's been below thirty in my yard for the past 10 days. I didn't have much that had sprouted earlier, which I was worrying about, but I did have 12 little bok choy sprouts. They are still out there, and today I have spinach sprouts. Every morning I expect to go out and see them dead. Today I decided to stop worrying about it and just fix it so I didn't have to do anything more for them. So I had some old windows and I put my containers up against the west facing foundation of the house and propped windows over them. The ends are open, but I thought it might just give them the little extra that might help through this cold spell. I actually had to water all the containers today because it was sunny and cold here yesterday. Looks like another week of this weather on the forecast and I've planted my peas early for the first time in years, of course. [g]...See MoreMy tubers over wintered in raised beds!
Comments (6)Dahlia growers on the Oregon coast have traditionally dug and divided their tubers in the Spring as they do not get enough cold to freeze dahlias in the ground. For the past two years in a row there have been cold snaps that have frozen tubers before Spring. Two years ago it happened in the first part of December and caught people by surprise. To be sure, dahlias should be dug and divided before the really cold weather. By the way, you do not have to wait for a killing frost, just cut off the stalks and dig a few days later. The eyes will have swollen and dividing will be very easy. Digging does not need to be done in freezing temperatures....See MoreWe have all lost a Great Man 'the Dahila Guru'
Comments (4)Thanks for posting this Diane. I've been sad about this loss since I heard the news last week. I had great respect for Bernie who so freely shared his knowledge of dahlia care. He was working on an updated photo/article for the ADS, I think, and I wish they'd publish it in his honor. For any of you using the plastic wrap tuber storage method, the Mandella Method, you have Bernie and Midge Mandella along with Dr. Richard Peters to thank for your success. We have lost a real innovator and generous man....See MoreCA Kate z9
