Raised platform greenhouse project
Comments (14)Thanks for your wisdom. I just want to clarify a few things. The windows are sandwiched between 2X4s on the top and bottom of each row which are supported all around by 6x6 posts in the 4 corners. They basically 'sit' on the 2x4's. The roof is anchored to the four 6x6 posts, so any weight on the roof should direct to the posts primarily and if there is some load on the low side, there's a 4x4 post horizontally at the bottom of that roof also which is also anchored to the 6x6 posts. If the posts sink unevenly I can see that might crack some windows, but hopefully the 4x4 takes the brunt of that weight to the 6x6 posts evenly over time and any sinking happens in unison. The floor has nothing to do with it.. which leads me into the next point... The decking (floor) is totally independent from the walls of windows and roof. The deck is on it's own concreted 6x6 supports. This way if the deck sinks, it has no bearing on the rest of the structure. Think of the deck as it's own island inside a shell that surrounds it. If the deck sinks and the shell doesn't that's ok. If the shell sinks and the deck sinks that's ok too. If they both sink that's also ok. It's only an issue if the shell doesn't sink evenly all around where I might have window trouble. Time will tell on this. We will see how the floor holds up. I did the same thing with no waterproof canvas over it in the old greenhouse (tent one). It lasted 2 years before the floor got funky and that was with no waterproof cover. Basically am experimenting here. I had the underlayment from ripping up carpet in the house. a free insulator, so figured I'd give it another try, but with the canvas over it to see what that's like. :) I do appreciate your expertise, but you may not have been aware of my design choices and my thought process behind them. Hope it makes sense and I get some good years out of the design. It will certainly be better than that plastic tent greenhouse that this is replacing (2 seasons)....See Morebest-MADE modern furniture? looking for chaise
Comments (13)I liked quite a few clean-lined sofas in both the Baker and Hickory Chair lines. But I don't think I'm prepared to spend 4K+. And yes, that does seem to be the bottom of their ranges. Egads. Now I'm looking at a couple of nice pieces made by Century/Destinations and Vanguard/Michael Weiss. They look good, are reputed to be well-made, and I could spend closer to 3K. I think it really might be the case that NO ONE makes sofas like Gramma's any more. The market isn't there, as folks don't want to live with the same look for their whole lives. I think Gramma had hers custom made through one of those great old NYC department stores that no longer exist. She may have been exaggerating, but I think she told me hers cost $5K when she bought it around 1940. Imagine! Gramma passed away peacefully last month at the age of 87, and I'm gonna buy a sofa in her memory. But to buy a sofa like she did way back then would probably cost me a year's salary. Not gonna happen. I don't have the kind of nerve that grand old woman did! She knew what she wanted, and by golly she got it and held onto in. Her old sofa is still going strong--she had it recovered just once, in the same garnet-colored velvet. One of my favorite lines about her sofa was when she'd hollar at us not to be d%#m careful about our possessions. She'd point to her glamorous old sofa and exclaim, "It's been peed on by experts!" She was a firecracker, my old gramma....See Moreplatform bed*moisture mold mattress*help
Comments (16)The "supports" down the middle of the bed are those 3 flimsy laminate boards that screw onto the top of the heavy pieces. So I will make a strong brace, drill holes thru the back of each of the baskets cubbies (those baskets are stuffed full of clothes towels etc, so will the air flow thru the holes ,then thru the dead coffin area as I call it, then thru the other side holes out into the opposite baskets? I have only 4 rooms, all literally separate, kitchen, living, bedroom 1,bedroom 2. the bathroom is really tiny. it does have a double hung window in it, so i should crack it when showering and for a bit after.. Regarding cleaning the bed, first of all, yes the bottom of the mattress is damp, I have puddles of water on top of the laminate, but have no smell in the water, no color, no residue showing on the furniture yet, and no stain on the mattress, just wet. I may have caught this problem early? I should cut open the mattress to see what is in there? So since i have no "mold" i.e. gray green blue icky stuff on the furniture, can I just wipe it down with lysol? Is mold visible? (I know a dumb question) The bed is nicely wet, but the laminate has not gotten soggy at all, still firm. I'll look into a humidifier(s). hope they don't cost as much as the electric heater! oh, and you asked about my health? You make me crack up on that one. I have had a cold on/off/ on/off for months (could be my sister's kids I nanny sit for tho), one of my cats has developed asthma...... I think I will hit ikea and buy a futon style bed (just the cushion part,no frame) or maybe a thick foam topper and sleep on the living room floor (the other bedroom has no heat, take off that flimsy laminate and let the bed breathe for awhile after I drill the holes. -;like a few weeks min? Like you mentioned earlier, I'm not investing in an expensive mattress until I know this problem is fixed. so tomorrow I will pull the bed apart-when I get help to move that heavy mattress....See MorePool Furniture...Confused!!!!!
Comments (16)We have cast aluminum tables, chairs, and 2 chaises and love them for the durability and easy maintenance. We bought the tables 4 years ago at Sams before we had the pool and the chaises this year from Home Depot. For under our covered patio we bought wicker resin chairs from Home Depot. We wanted something that was comfortable, looked good and easy to maintain. I liked some of the more cushiony seating but with dogs and kids, I was afraid they wouldn't hold up as well over the years. My husband also built a bar and coffee table. for under the patio. Hopefully these will hold up well under the covered patio. Good luck with your choices - there are a lot of options out there!...See MoreMystic Pools, LLC
