Even if you could get the required electrical outlets, the plumbing obstacles may be insurmountable. Plumbing codes in most localities require a 2" standpipe for a washer hook-up. It's unlikely that a condo would be set up for a 2" drain line, as most sinks don't require a drain that large. The next problem will be properly venting the washer standpipe. Unless there's a nearby vent stack that you could tie into, or you're on a top floor and the building owner will allow you vent through the roof (highly unlikely), you're probably out of luck. Then there's the question of an energy source for a dryer. Do you have a 220V circuit with sufficient amperage in your unit to support an electric dryer? If not, is there a gas line in the kitchen that could be tapped for a gas dryer? And finally, let's not forget venting for a dryer. Unless you go with a condenser dryer, you're going to need to vent the dryer exhaust to the outside. All in all, I think you're being overly optimistic if you think this would be a simple project. You probably should have held out for a place that included washer and dryer hook-ups.

Because aging-in-place is one of our primary concerns in our build, convenient laundry is a priority. I know that my grandmother struggled with moving baskets down the hallway. However, I'm doing a laundry room adjacent to the master closet ... and we'll have a door between them. Together, but separate. Also, I may be a bit bitter as I say this, but I'd think twice about going with another front-loader (and if you're talking about stacking, I assume front-loaders are the only option). Mine's about six years old, and it's dying. I called a repair man, and he said, "I may be costing myself money, but does it do this and that?" And when I checked it and said yes, his answer was, "It's your rear bearing, and it'd be almost the cost of a new washer to replace it. I see it all the time, and I don't want to take your money to come out and check it just to disappoint you." I appreciated his honesty. It's a Whirlpool Duet, and it wasn't cheap. I certainly expected more than six years out of it.

Ideally, an HVAC professional. I'm far from an expert, however, the task is often easy enough for anyone who's the least bit handy. A 5' length of 4" metal ducting costs $7 at Home Depot. You may need a couple of 90-degree turns, and an outside covered vent--all told, under $50 in materials (the most expensive part is the metal ducting tape that costs about $15/roll). You may also need a 4-1/8" hole-saw and a drill (or some other cutting tool) to cut a 4" hole into your siding. If you need the cosmetics of an in-wall vent installation, that's a bit more challenging (needing an even "handier" guy/gal), and requires more specialized ducting, which is slightly more expensive, and not carried by Home Depot. I've had three of these units for 5 months, since July. They work hard in my household. Typically, each machine will run 2 loads per day. Love that I can have two machines in the space I used to have one washer and one dryer. Love that they are ventless. There is less shrinkage and I'm not finding more wrinkled clothing than with the vented dryer. Clothing is supposed to last longer with ventless. Ventless uses less energy too. I live in a rural area. I feel like without the vent to the outside, there's less opportunity for rodents to find their way inside. Yes, with a very full load, these machines can take a while to dry. Still, the convenience of not having to transfer from the washer to the dryer is well worth it to me. Connected to my phone, I'm not making multiple trips to the laundry room checking to see if clothes are dry. I just look at my phone and I know when the drying is done. Here are my other observations after 5 months of use with the three units. You have to be fastidious cleaning all the filters for the machines to wash and dry optimally. Instructions say the primary lint filter needs cleaning every 5 cycles. I find it needs to be cleaned every cycle. The secondary, foam filter presumably only needs cleaning every 50 loads. I find every 3-5 loads is necessary. The filter at ground level has to be cleaned frequently in my home too and I don't think that one is even in the manual. I discovered this one on YouTube early on when items weren't getting dry. Once I learned to clean all three filters regularly, thorough drying has not been an issue. You also have to regularly clean the cavity where the double filters, lint & foam, slide out. You will find a lot of dryer lint builds up in there. I use a flashlight to check when to clean the cavity. I bought different items to clean this narrow cavity. We probably have more dog fur in our laundry than the average household so this may be a factor. We also have a lot of heavily soiled work items and these machines clean every bit as good, if not better, than my previous LG front load machines. I've used the heavy soil option and extra water option for seriously filthy items. I never use softeners. It's a minor annoyance that you can't permanently let the machine know you don't use them. So, even though I've saved frequently used cycles for ease of use, I still have to turn off the softener option for every cycle. The machine will always prompt you regarding the softener and then you have to press the prompt for several seconds to turn it off. Now for the concerning news. One of the machines didn't dry a load recently and now no matter what cycle I choose, the machine comes on, the drum turns for a few minutes and then the machine shuts itself off. It is still under warrantee, so, presumably, it will be repaired under warranty. But, if this happens again just after the warrantee expires, I fear this will be an expensive repair. I'm concerned about longevity now. Time will tell on that.
