Thanks! We don’t like the golden colour, probably something a bit darker. We also worry that something too dark would be too much with the dark couches.

For a medium neutral brown, I always recommend "Special Walnut." However, it might not pair well with brown leather sofas. Are you planning on keeping them?

Yes the furniture will stay the same

Mid-toned brown shades would be a better fit. For a modern, bold sleek contemporary design style, rich red hues would be very out of place. Ebony, white, or one of the various grey shades would be much better suited.

It's too bad you don't like your floor color. Your floors are beautiful and harmonize perfectly with your stone fireplace. Most darker floor stains, with current furniture, will give you a very dark room and not go as well with the fireplace which has some golden touches.

What would help are some golden accents, a larger rug with gold accents to make it all work. Also a much paler shade of gray on the walls would balance out your two dark sofas. So just suggesting a different approach before you go to all the bother of darker floors that may not work nearly as well as your current floors do with you beautiful fireplace.

I don't think the floors are an issue here. I do see other things you should do before you take the staining route.

I would invest in a properly sized rug for the room and not refinish the floors
