Help with paint colors and backsplash

I’m remodeling my kitchen. I’m adding a distressed black island and a 6’ group of cabinets along wall next to doorway. (Alder to match existing cabinetry). Countertops will be matte black leather finish around perimeter with a creamy granite on island. ( have not selected yet) My floors are a dark brown concrete. The room is fairly dark. I would like to replace backsplash with something lighter. Maybe something creamy to pick up on island granite. Not sure if shiny or travertine would work.I would also like to go lighter on paint. Lots of wood in my home. Any suggestions? Thank you

The room is past fairly dark it is a hole you need major lighting to work with what you plan . I assume the island is going where the table is and IMO black would not be my choice for either the counter or the island Maybe I need a bit more info. BTW IMO you either have a different color of cabinet for the island or a different counter but not both.

A matte black counter top and black island will not add any lightness. It will have the opposite effect. Do your lighting first….you want to have light directly over the island and work areas. Your cabinetry looks good, but I would reduce the dust-collectors on top by about 50%. If your island will be used for casual daily dining, be sure you have enough space for occupied stools between the new cabinetry and the island so a person can pass behind the stools.

Thanks prill...I'm leaning towards only doing tile in area to the left of the casing...then in the window area just doing paint and the casing down to the counter. I guess I'll just have to be more dilligent with cleaning. The Reef was the first tile that spoke to me...I really thought I was going to go for a more solid blue, but reef is so much softer....it allows me to play up the color of the walls more...not that I have a lot of walls...And, I found out that my designer can get it for about 12.50/sf where I was quoted around $15/sf.

"is there an option to remove the 4" countertop backsplash?" It looks like granite from the photo, so there should be a seam at the angle where the backsplash meets the top of the counter. In which case it can be removed without taking off the whole thing. Using a bold color would help liven up the space. Something that accents the colors in the countertop. Then find a backsplash that works with them both. Or maybe something neutral in a texture tile to give it interest without add too many colors. Change out the hardware to match the color of new appliances, and consider changing the pendant lights to a modern fixture that matches as well. Best of luck!

OH BOY. I'm sorry I know you must be unraveled, but realistically it looks more like the counters dont go with your kitchen as they are brown tones and everything else looks black white and gray. Why did you leave the granite backsplash up? that would help minimize it a bit I think.. We need to see the whole room.

Thank you. The space is 13x15 with vaulted ceiling. I currently have 9 cans plus under cabinet lighting. I plan to replace 2 cans with hanging pendants over island. I’ve allowed 42 inch clearance around island on all sides. We are also adding about 700 sf of dining and living next to this space with 10 ft ceilings, rustic beams and lots of windows. Plants on cabinets will go. This is going from occasional retreat to full time home. The island will provide seating for 3. Dining table in adjoining room (open) will seat 10. I have the black counters in another home and really like them. They look great with glazed cabinets. My thought is that a lighter backsplash, wall paint, runners and island top will bring some contrasting elements that will make it pop.
