Our rec room has a suspended ceiling metal grid with 2x4 ceiling tiles. We won't change the grid but will replace the tiles as needed. Here is a photo to give an idea: This photo is looking from one end of the long family room to the window at the other end other. On the floor plan, the photographer is on the far right looking to the the left wall. The blue arrow points to a "black hole" which corresponds to the image posted above depicting an area where the tile had been removed for replacement of the original fluorescent light. (Also the turquoise area in the diagram!) What is a little unusual in this basement is that the original owner who finished the rec room did not have the original fluorescent lights hard wired. Instead, he installed electric outlets at the light locations and used plug in shop lights. It seems like that ought to make it easier for us to relamp the whole thing with LED can lights, but I can't figure out how!

can't picture current kitchen or eventual space from glimpses through doorways. also, not sure what you are asking -- how to design the whole kitchen, or how to deal with cabinets on a wall with a sloped ceiling? 1) ignore the slope, and let it just be far above the cabinets 2) fill the extra space with shelves 3) Stagger cabinets but don't fill space to vault 4) pick a height and soffit down to it 5) fill the vault to ceiling with custom cabinets So, the right answer depends a bit on the size of the vault, the style of your kitchen, budget, and personal preference. How exciting for you! I've always wanted to decorate a kids play room just like this! If it were mine, I would Paint the ceiling white, the end wall hand painted tree branches, leaves with some twigs and a bird or two. hang a grommet drape or tarp in the V of the ceiling... on both ends, creating a tent effect. For lighting, I'd hang a big round ball pendant light, like a moon/sun. it Would be a pretty fun playroom/tent for adventures.

By paying attention to the ceiling in the video link of our basement you will see placement of various lights and trims. Within roughly 650 sq. ft. there are 17 cannisters, 2 sconces, 5 pendants and pucks within cabinets. All are on dimmers and are 3-5 feet apart based on intended purpose. I placed tape on the floor to create a placement plan. Some cans are installed within soffits between ducts. Depending on their purpose, lights wash walls or are general/task. Because these were placed before LED’s were practical, no more than 3 are controlled by any dimmer. Hope this helps.
