Advice on Bathroom Tile - Porcelain Subway, Carrara Marble mix
Comments (23)Thank you so much to everyone for the advice. That's what I was afraid of...too many elements. It's an older home and I want to keep the "charm" of an older space. I was planning to use honed black granite for the counter tops. It's going to primarily function as a kid's bathroom. I am using the antique brick in a few other areas of the house. I recognize the riskiness here, but was hoping it would come across with a charm that is original to the home. The antique brick blends better with the other elements in the home than the carrara does. I'm still not sure how to bring it all together. I know that the white porcelain is timeless. Will the carrara/black and white bath be outdated, considering it's been such a popular choice the last couple of years? What about the subway tiles? What color does my bathroom want to be?
Comments (3)Oh, good. I know the floor looks really busy in my samples. It's going to really mellow out on the floor. I'll still have the red feature strip and there is nothing mellow about that. I just wanted to get the colors accurate for all to see and I have a good camera for close ups. I was thinking I'd like to do a subtle difference for the trim and kind of match the trim to the color of the sink and claw foot tub. I can re-paint but I have a bit of a problem with my painting arm so I'm hoping to get it right and move on to the next room. sigh....See MoreMaster bathroom help-crosspost from bathroom forum
Comments (19)olychick, thank you for taking a look. :) I'm relieved to hear you think a white shower pan is best. I am heading out now to find porcelain marble look tiles for the shower walls to pick up the gray as you suggested. I want a shiny finish to the walls. Tell me if you think that's a misstep. I am avoiding marble as I have a marble topped vanity now that is pock marked with etchings. As far as seeing myself in the vanity, yes, I think I will be able to do so. I was planning on a black framed mirror spanning the vanity. My current vanity is 32 1/4" high (as will be the new vanity) and when seated on my vanity stool my reflection is seen up to my chest. The only issue currently is that my knees are pressed against drawers. I failed to mention that I was thinking of using absolute black granite for the vanity top for two reasons: one being cost and the other being to avoid etching. Will doing so deviate too much from my inspiration? Lastly, I had the idea of applying pieces of beveled mirror framed by black molding floor to ceiling along the back wall and continuing behind the toilet (similar to this only floor to ceiling with the exception of base molding & crown): [Traditional Bathroom[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/traditional-bathroom-ideas-phbr1-bp~t_712~s_2107) by Northbrook Architects & Building Designers Michael A. Comments (16)Arto has three color/price ranges. Our color (desert) happened to fall in the lowest price range at $5.00/sq ft., but we're in So Cal near their factory. Get a copy of their catalog ao you can study the color options. The tiles are thicker and uneven because they are handmade. Hopefully you can find something that works out. Edit: they always have a long lead time because they custom make each order. I don't think they keep much stock on hand. Somewhere on their site, they have some existing stock for sale. I'll see if I ca find the link to the place on the site. This post was edited by 1929Spanish on Tue, Jun 17, 14 at 9:22...See Morebpath
