Can I have different countertops in my kitchen?

I would like to replace my island as it was installed on top of my hardwood floors and is a bit taller than my cabinet counters and I don't like the shape of it. It currently has Sienna Bourdeaux granite on it, matching the rest of my countertops. I don't want to have to replace all the countertops just because I'm redoing the island and wondered what I could have on the island that would go with the Sienna Bourdeaux. I'm not a fan of butcher block so that is not an option. Maybe a quartz or a dark gray soapstone? I've seen dark solid color countertops on the surrounding cabinets and the busier granites on the island. Would the reverse work?

What about your cabinets? Are they dark or light, all the same color?

Lucky, my cabinets are a light cream color. My island is a gray. I would probably do a different color island again as the cabinets for the island and the rest of the kitchen would not be an exact match, which is okay in my mind. I have hardwood floors.

Can i reuse my granite countertops in a kitchen renovation?

if you need new cabinets but want the same layout, just get the bottom ones refaced and get new uppers (or get those refaced as well). This way the granite can stay in place. if you actually need new boxes, get them on the uppers and try to make the bottoms work or get them fixed. if you plan on moving things around, well, you're SOL (unless they can pry up that granite. Usually not)

I love the slabs you are looking at. Beth is great at this and has very good taste and knows her color schemes! I too like the tempest with the stone and cabinet choice but it has what you like best. Just because we all think it looks great does not mean you love it. Maybe you do need to look at more. Look at all of Beth's beautiful pictures. You want to be sure and you should LOVE your choice. I just went through this myself and this house we are building will most likely be my last (scary thought) so I understand where you are coming from. Get the stone that you jump at immediately and love. Maybe Beth and AJCN can fly out and come with you :)

New slab installed!!!! And…. The fabricator cut the wrong part 🤦🏻‍♀️ But, otherwise, the manufacturer handled the original issue! So that was great. A few words of wisdom - if you are planning on getting Metropolis Dark or Metropolis Grey - check for the lines!!!! I have now seen it in 4 out of the 5 slabs I’ve viewed. In our new slab it was just down at the very bottom, so easy to cut around, but most that I’ve seen are more center. Apparently, it’s part of “how that stone is made”…. Also, despite it being quartz, it HAS to be sealed. We lived with that defective piece for 4 weeks and no sealant…it was a mess! You can not drip anything (including water) on it! One morning I was scrubbing out cat prints because my cat had tracked water from the sink. It was super cute, but not the look I was going for. :) Also, make sure that you, personally, tell the fabricator if you want a specific area of the stone. In spite of our fabricator seeing first hand what the defect was, he still did not catch it on the new slab… and although I had, none of the people working in my renovation passed the information to him… Ok, those are my lessons for the day! Also - Tenax Proseal seemed to be the least color altering sealant for this slab… but I did a lot of testing on the bad one to double check. Happy kitchen renos, everyone!

You could use a solid patterned quartz on the island: these are only examples, you could also use a plain grey or beige/cream

I like that. Now I just need to decide if the light cream color would be better or a dark gray/blackish color. I have small black 1" diamond shaped tiles scattered in my beige blacksplash stone. I did this before all the grays and whites became so popular. Now wish I could do a complete kitchen redo but that's probably not going to happen. But it's good to know that I can mix countertop styles because that is what I was struggling with.
