What to paint this ugly 1970s house / Window color options
Comments (7)I think this house is going to be lovely. I'm a little late to this thread. First of all tackle the yard. if your short on $, contact your local vocational school for some idea's/hire from students in the landscaping class. The driveway and walk way are sweet, just some definition on the walk way. I'd paint the house a BM Sage green, the window trim a white or off white, it goes with every thing. Once you've picked a color rarely does anyone change the body color of the house, paint the trim around the garage door and door the same body color of the house. But painting them the same color it gives the illusion the house is larger. Then accent the entrance pillars with some decorative trim and paint it and the over hang only a complementary color ( see BM suggestions chart to what ever color you choose) It has great bones, hope this helps...See MoreCan a new exterior grout color change our ugly home?
Comments (17)I LOVE your house and II would not touch that mortar - it goes nicely with the aged stone look. I would stay in the brown family for roof color to compliment the aged stone look - not a color that is bright or harsh or crisp. The door is too "fancy" for the house and all the trim is too "crisp" white...look in the cream/taupe/earth-tone family. Not navy or black. Shrubs need to go - think subtle English countryside landscaping. I also agree on clapboard, not stucco, for your addition. I can see ivy climbing the walls - but won't suggest that as you can never get rid of it and it is not good for your stone. Looking forward to your transformation....See MoreNeed help on color scheme for ugly 1970s house
Comments (20)I just wanted to add to a few of the comments... Wider trim becomes a feature of design rather then a functional necessary. I'd keep it. I'm always looking at how something can be done in the Least expensive manner, and the least wasteful way. I say work with what you've got! You have a 70's/modern architecture, trying to make it into anything else with out a large redesign will most likely leave you with one of those houses people drive by and say hmm that somehow doesn't work. Can't change an apple into an orange but a nice buffing up can do wonders for that apple. Cream vs white. Yes white is crisp! It's contrast-y, and clean, it pops! But it can also be quite cold, and when you haven't alot of decorative trim to emphasize, and are working with a modern shape, it can feel too sharp. Sharp is not at all homey. An off white will still give you nice contrast, and keep those blunt edges soft and appealing. (hence why I suggested a cream tone- BUT avoid buttery tones with yellows) Bonus, that color matches all earthy neutral tones nicely. I would suggest the double doors, in keeping with the buildings design. But if you haven't room for them, I suggest the faux windows as you mention but the door and windows should not be of the classical variety with much wood-little window. You may be surprised at the options now in glass doors, such as privacy and security. The master bedroom where you are replacing the long windows? Keep them on the longer side then the boxy sort. In fact, take your photo..or my mock up and in an editor, toss in some square boxy windows. Very quickly you should note you lose your unique design and end up with a boring boxy wall. As far as landscaping goes...if you select low maintenance, drought resistant perennial plants and shrubbery, the up keep is amazingly easy, and you'll only need to replace the mulch once a year. Cheaper then gas for the mower and less time consuming too! Just remember to keep it natural looking!...See MoreCan someone help me to choose color for this ugly ranch house ????
Comments (10)Hi Rubina, in the small size photo attached, it's hard to see much detail. If you could post a larger file, by itself, t would help. That said, from the little I can view, here are some thoughts: 1. It appears you have a lot of different materials and details on the house which chop it up and make it feel busy. You can create harmony by using one color on most or all of these surfaces; I would consider a cream or warm off-white (assuming you are keeping the brown roof currently in place). 2. Your landscaping is beautiful - ad you thought about pulling a color from one of those blooms, and using it either on the front door, or just as an accent - say in a pot by the door, a bench, or a welcome mat? If you have further questions, feel free to email me directly at Info@PaintColorHelp.com. Good luck, looks like a cute place!...See Moreelcieg
