Can multiple azaleas in one pot be separated?

I bought some 3 gallon azaleas (Formosa series) earlier this year and have not yet planted them in the ground. I noticed that each pot has three plants growing in it to make it look nice and full. Should I plant them as is from the pot or divide them and plant each separately.

I have absolutely no experience with azaleas. I read that they have shallow fibrous roots, so while I would like to separate the plants, I don't want to damage them and have them die.
