How to arrange small, long den

I am trying to figure out the best placement for the TV in this room. The room is 21' x 11.25'

The first picture is a view from the hall, the second is a view from the fireplace.

Thoughts? I'm flexible on furnishings, we have a long cabinet that our 55" TV sets on (I think it is 60" wide) but I'm not opposed to a smaller TV (we have a 40") or mounting it somewhere. The fireplace is a gas log. I also have a 3 seat mid-century sectional and an accent chair but our family is 7 people so more seating would be nice.

If you are keeping as is, maybe try mounting tv above fireplace. Sectional and accent chair floating in room past the closet door, sectional facing fireplace and accent chair right there next to it by closet door, angled towards tv. Add another accent chair in corner by built in and a small sofa or loveseat that coordinates with your other furniture pieces on the long wall perpendicular to the fireplace.

Iheart, I wish I could display the picture. You'd stop worrying that your couches might be too deep. C&F has never done the oversize furniture thing, I'm sure, but the old couches shown are by current styles here definitely "over-stuffed" and also nice and deep--the kind I like to snuggle into with my feet pulled up. The overall effect makes an asset of the smallish dimensions. My vote on your selections would be to vary the masses and to some degree shapes of sofas versus chairs. You're not copying a picture, of course, but for what it's worth that has two matching skirted sofas; however, between the solid masses of the sofas is a light-scale coffee table, so it doesn't look as if they're packing a cargo container. They used two different chairs angling in. One is a fully upholstered armchair that could hide a swivel base and the other is much lighter scale, with seat and back upholstered, but open at the bottom. It does make sense that what you put between the sofas might help determine whether to go skirted or open on them. Wish I could rearrange whenever I want. I didn't break DH in early enough, and he complains when he discovers something's not where it "should be." If I ask him to help, he grumbles and then has to live with it grudgingly for a while before deciding he doesn't really care one way or the other. :)

I wouldn't do that fireplace surround. It's jus not a good look w/the type room/decor you have. try it elsewhere. try craigslist and similar sources for rugs, tables, shelving. as for the room layout, for the wall that's next to the doorway, and to the right of window (pic #3 up top) what if you did some cool shelving or book cases? I'd also look into doing some sort of shade or blind instead of those bulky drapes. This is a simple layout you could copy. a larger sofa w/a chaise would work for that room better than your two sofas. if doing a tv, try a shallow console and mount the tv to the wall. you can do a 'coffee table' by utilizing an ottoman or something similar. this type of sofa against the large windows would work out better. notice the blinds, nice contrasting paint color on the walls, colorful rug, potted plants. same layout. Imagine your windows are behind the sofa. shallow shorter shelving on the opposing wall is great for kids toys and books. mount tv. fabric ottoman for coffee table. neutral rug.

Move round table toward wall for now so you have a pathway to slider door. Not sure what the person you had helping was thinking but we ALWAYS map out walkways and “transportation” around and between rooms. The basic furniture is too large for your space but this is probably best arrangement for now. At some point, I would put chairs in a media room or game room. Two smaller scale swivel chairs in a complimentary fabric would improve everything. A “gate leg” table behind sofa would serve dual purpose. When leaf is raised 3 could eat a meal. When lowered it would act as a sofa table.

I like the arrangement with the desk under the window, facing into the room. That leaves room for a long console with enclosed cabinets and shelves on the wall under the tv for your printer and other storage. You can go as long as you want on the console. You have enough room to move your rug all the way under the chairs so the console can sit on the floor.

A good brief makes for a good design.. floor plan showing dimensions and door/ window openings at a minumum if you want meaningful answers

What are you going to use the room for? Are you wondering where a TV would fit? My first choice for a TV would be remove the shelving and inset a TV in the built in. No doubt these days your TV is larger than that. Dimensions of the room would be helpful and what size furniture you have. Is the room deep enough for two seating areas? A seating area and a games table?

I’m a stickler for symmetry and i don’t like the single bookcase on the right and the FP brick extended to the left. How do you feel about it?

The asymetry does not bother me enough to do anything about it now.

My oringal thought was tv and console to the left/perpendicular to the fireplace. i dont know how much space we would need by the sliding doors though

You could do that but not sure you could increase seating with TV there.

It looks like it would be easiest to place the TV over the fireplace. We might suggest floating a sectional or sofa facing the TV/fireplace in the middle of the room, and adding more seating to the left of the fireplace if need be. Here are some of our designs to help you with visuals.

Okay having moved in now, my husband now wants the tv on the opposite wall of the fireplace (11') and to create 2 distinct areas. He thinks a section with the chaise along the wall between the closet and hallway door and a recliner near the opening by the kitchen would work. Thoughts? We are looking at Home Reserve sectionals because we can customize their size/shape.

It could work. Not sure if a recliner would fit in well. Probably just have to really measure everything out and make sure you have enough seating, and space to walk around everything.
