Help with Tile Design - Subway & Glass Tile
Comments (22)This is such a great thread!! I really like the idea of vertical subways and then accent glass tiles running vertically in the shower to simulate the waterfall (I saw metalic ones this way in a video on the HGTV site). I have a small city bathroom so not much room to play with. My mind in dancing around this idea but if I did that then the only 'wow' would be that one vertical stripe within the shower. (All four walls will be tiled since the moisture situation makes this the only real choice so that leaves painting the walls outside the shower not an option.) If I go the traditional horizontal subway tile route with an accent strip all around the whole bathroom then the 'wow' is everywhere but the overall looks isn't as modern as I'd like. I really like the modernness of the vertical layout but how can I incorporate the glass tiles elsewhere besides the one vertical stripe in the shower? Anyone have any creative ideas?...See Morebird bath and talavera tile
Comments (3)So in my true, indecisive manner, after painting the birdbath I have decided to use glass instead of talavera (too thick/wrong colors). So the problem I have is that the bird bath bowl has a raised design on it (not much in the very middle but up the sides, flowers/leaves). If I want to even it out a bit before mosaic-ing, can I use some thinset to build up and fill in the gaps, let it dry and then mosaic? Or just dump a bunch of thinset in and put the pieces into it? I appreciate any help. In the pic below, you can see leaves/branches/flowers dipping into the bowl. It is hard to see the ones I didn't paint but they are there. (ignore the tile, I was playing around with ideas) Here is a link that might be useful:...See Morebold talavera tile backsplash
Comments (11)Thanks for the positive comments! I will definitely post more photos when we get it cleaned up. I still have tiles stacked on the table, molding strips waiting around on one of the counters, etc. Plus these hideous dollar store neon orange curtains that we bought just for privacy while we wait on finishing the window trim. Never thought we'd be living with those for months, lol! Smiling, these are the Ramsjo white doors, not painted. We figured we could always go back and paint if we found them too pink in the end, but we are fine with them as they are. They've held up great so far, though it's just near 9 months of use, so not exactly a long time test. The color depends entirely on lighting in my experience. In natural sunlight and some artifical light, they are a warm white, but not pink at all. In some artificial light, and especially in dim light or shade, they can appear more pink. Lighting plus the other colors around the cabinets make the difference, I think. We nixed some other Mexican tile that we originally loved because when we held up the samples on that wall, there was too much yellowish off-white in the tiles, and it seemed like paring them together with the Ramsjo doors made both look significantly worse....See MoreTalavera tile stair risers flaking grout
Comments (5)Tile and grout doesn't flex. It cracks. Wood does flex. And it seems that the wood in this case may be flexing quite a bit more than even you expected. That's a stair construction issue, not a tile issue. The tile is just the symptom of deflection in the stairs. Sealing isn't going to do a thing. Reinforcing the stairs underneath might. Depends on the stair construction. Tile is never ever the best choice to install onto wood. It should only be used on masonry, or steel and masonry.. A paint stencil would have been the better choice. That's a design failure that shouldn't have happened. Lay that at the feet of the designer....See MoreLibrary Shortcake
