Is it safe to just use a wire nut to extend a wire to a light fixture?

I'm trying to replace a broken pull chain light iin my basement and i know nothing about electricity and all of the electricians ive called are either booked out for weeks or ripping me off, the hot wire is too short to reach the new light. It also looks like it is wrapped together with a second hot wire? If I unwind them i could probably get enough wire but its brittle and keeps breaking on me so im hesistant to do that. Can i just get some same gauge wire and just put the 3 wires in a nut to extend it enough to make it to the light?
