Pleasant looking room. Would not try changing everything at once. You might begin by replacing only the uncomfortable seating and keep the other furnishings. For comfort, you cannot beat a recliner if you want to replace the individual chairs first. There are "ladies" recliners that are smaller as well as huge oversized ones. A platform rocker or wing back chair would be worth considering -- either can be comfortable. Consider a two-seat sofa -- a love seat -- instead of a larger sofa that would fit in the same space as your current sofa rather than crowd the room. Alternately, if you find a two-seat sofa you truly like, and don't want a recliner, you might consider getting a pair of two-seat sofas and set them across from each other -- maybe even keeping one or both of your current chairs to put where your sofa now sits until you find something you truly like to replace them. Sit in what you buy before buying it and make sure it is comfortable for you -- for your size. What is comfortable for a 6'6" guy is usually not be comfortable for a smaller guy or petite female.

thanks! the sunset painting is temp, had a nail there already from some Halloween decoration, but good point centering it. Glad this rug works because the other one was a wool rug and it was a pain to clean and would shed so much. One thing I wanted to ask, I hate the way the ceiling beams connect to the wall, it looks like Lego and cheap looking. I want to add a triangular piece of wood that screws into the beam and the wall (painted the same for as the beams). Is there a name for this? Looked up wood beam wall connection but nothing (English is not my first language). I feel like I might have to customer make this thing myself. I'll try to post a photo of what I mean.

UPDATE: Thanks everyone for your help! I think I have a plan. I was going to edit my original post but it won't let me :/ In any case, I've decided to use the taupe paint currently in my dining room everywhere else. It provides the earthy sophisticated feel I'm looking for while still feeling warm and working with the red armoire, my red kitchen cabinets and will make the white subway and white kitchen cabinets pop I think. Going with a gray sofa and gray patterned chairs. May or may not change the rug for a monochrome gray depending on how it looks. Also going to move my entertainment center to the middle of the wall opposite the sofa. I didn't think it would work to have the chairs on either side due to the 26" depth of the armoire, BUT I think if I just move them out from the wall it should work fine. Woo hoo! I wanted to suggest you try something in your dining room. Move your 2 upholstered chairs from the ends of the table to face each other in the middle, and put 2 wooden chairs on the ends. i would also move the candlesticks to the sideboard and while i know you are trying to update, i think a lace table cloth might look nice on your table And clip on mini shades for the chandelier
