The link below is US DOE Energy Star list of commercial coolers and freezers. It shows daily kwh usage, multiply by 365 x [your local $/kwh rate] for the estimated annual energy cost. I don't know what ambient temp and usage this rating assumes, but it's close enough for government work. The list is hard to read online, print it out and put on your reading glasses - or download to Excel. Just for fun, I looked up a pair of True 54'' wide two oor reach-in coolers, one with glass doors (T49G) and one with solid doors (T49), both with 44 cu ft capacity. The glass door model is rated at 6.3 kwh/day, the solid door is rated 3.5 kwh/day. At my local energy rate (appx $0.11/kwh) that's $253/yr and $141/yr. The Frigidaire Commercial cooler is also on the list. 32'' wide, 18 cu ft, and the solid door version is rated at 1.15 kw/day. You could put two side-by-side in 64'', get 36 cu ft, and pay $98/yr at my local rate. Seems like a pretty efficient unit, and relatively quiet too. Then I compared that to the cost of running two residential units. Two of these combined have 40 cu ft capacity and use 448 x 2 / 365 = 2.45 kwh/day. At $0.11/kwh, that's $99/yr. But, that unit is 36'' wide, so two will take up 72'' width versus the 54'' for the True. I don't know if these are the most energy-efficient units on the lists, I just picked some brands that I recognized. Hope that helps. Personally I'm planning for a space about 55'' wide to accomodate various possible refrigerators, since commercial units don't have standardized dimensions like residential units. I'll ignore the gap, hang a broom in it, or install a small filler. Oh, one other thing I've noticed about commercial units - they sometimes (often? usually?) have doors that can open fully without requiring additional width/clearance. I assume this is to allow multiple coolers/freezers to sit side-by-side. If you were planning to recess your refrigeration fully into the cabinetry (for a quasi-built-in look) that might be useful. mtrot I don’t know the answer. I try to ask. When I go to private appliance stores I have pulled out my cell phone to look up the model number and it’s reviews and they (salesmen) are insulted. To dig deep you have to know the serial number as well. You look at the serial number on the compressor because if you were to replace the compressor or if the company were to replace the compressor the serial number would change. There are other refrigerators that have bad compressors too. Somewhere on here or on HOUZZ, never sure where I am, there is a large group that talks about refrigerators and you get on there some appliance people who repair refrigerators and they will tell you. Some owners have the ability to fix them. The biggest problem is water. Ice cubes flying out; water not going into the cup. That doesn’t seem to change but I do look to see how old the reviews are. It’s difficult because when you get a review from someone who just bought theirs in 2018 or 2019 and they say oh it’s just beautiful and we like it then that’s not helpful either because they have not witnessed the oncoming problems. There are no reviews that say that we have had it for 10 years and nothing has happened. I think the countries that make these appliances hate America. The site with lots of participation has one title which is “I know I shouldn’t have done it but I bought a Samsung refrigerator and I regret it .” That woman was a great spokes person because we were all together and I was watching each other‘s posts and she had just bought it and we were concerned. Then she wrote back and said that. Samsung is so expensive and looks good but is full of troubles including trying to find someone who will repair it. The Samsung office is rude is not helpful. I have made another rule for myself. If a refrigerator is on sale then I shouldn’t buy it or consider it. If word gets out that there is a very good refrigerator that will never go on sale. It’s like when I bought a speed queen dryer. You could not find one that was made in 2017 that had very good reviews. I ended up finding one that I thought was made in 2018. Brand new configuration. What I really had was one made in 2016.

@Green Olives My ice maker has been not working for a while, had it replaced under warranty, still not working. Had a repair guy out and they pulled codes off of the freezer and he said there's nothing that can be done to fix it. He suggested turning off the freezer and letting it thaw to see if it would make ice again. Lo and behold, it did, for about a month. Something in the line is freezing and causing it to stop functioning. For sure a faulty design by Frigidaire. Can you please provide a little more info about what you did to thaw out your line? Maybe a few photos of the exact areas? Thanks

This picture is from 2005 when my kitchen was fairly new. Dated now in design, but the work flow has been excellent over the years, so I just wanted to encourage you to stick with your ideas. The cooktop is centered in a 16 ft long kitchen. The large window on the left has a matching window (out of view) on the right. Because the cooktop is between windows & in shadow, I had a small fixed window installed to cast natural light on the cooktop. A fixed window met code requirements in my area. The KD I worked with pulled the cooktop & base cabinet forward about 3 inches, thinking that would help with splatter problems, and we added an overhead vent to supplement the Jenn Air downdraft because downdrafts have a reputation for being ineffective. I just replaced the Jenn Air cooktop last month with a Wolf induction. No more downdraft, & I'm surprised what a difference that makes. The downdraft was more effective than I thought it would be: I rarely needed the overhead before except for tall stockpots at a furious boil, & used it more for illuminating the cooking area at night. Now, the overhead vent isn't quite enough, & I'll need to replace it (maybe -- induction cooking is cleaner & doesn't spew out the heat & mess as much). Perhaps because the downdraft was directly vented outside -- very short distance, no elbows -- made it more effective than its reputation? As for the window, I'm so glad I added that for lighting purposes. It's nice having sunlight to cook by, & we often have nice flowers in the deck planters just outside to look at. It rarely gets splattered! I don't fry on the back burners, for one thing, and there's just enough distance from the cooktop to make a difference. I think a large window behind a cooktop would be heavenly, especially if there's a magnificent view. I've enjoyed having a corner sink. It's like its own work station in the kitchen -- near enough to be useful for a cook, far away enough that it doesn't butt into my work area. Roomy, space to sprawl. Hope this encourages you about the feasibility of your design plans.
