Nosoccermom, I'm actually sitting in the room now and had to move one of the chairs to the other side of the sofa because I couldn't see the tv from either one. I am not at all comfortable. However, I didn't buy these chairs to be comfortable and sat on for hours at a time. They are just for our office and are rarely used. I don't know how much time we'd spend in here if I had to sit on this chair. (Yes, I could sit on the couch with my husband but like oakleyok said, we like having our own space). My husband also was concerned that it's not really set up for interaction with the chairs there since everyone seems to be looking at the tv, not at eachother. He's still hoping for a sofa and loveseat or the sectional. I feel like the room has definitely opened up like this but if we're not comfortable watching tv, we will rarely sit in here - sad but true. I am at a stand still. I like the look but not for tv or talking. Maybe it can just look pretty. :) To answer your question, we do use it for watching tv. I'd say DH spends about 25% of his tv watching time in here and my oldest spends an hour or two after school in here reading or watching tv. I don't come in here on my own. I prefer the family room because it's off the kitchen and I can see everything that's going on if I am cooking/getting a snack for the kids or any of the other million things I have to do in there. I also hate looking at the old furniture in here and that will hopefully be solved soon. To answer the question about the sectional size, it was 120 inches long and 84 inches on the chaise side. So 10 feet by 7. The room is 19 x 12. The sectional would actually give me a little bit more room than the couch and loveseat that is presently in the room. It would take up much more room than a couch and 2 chairs.

I measured roughly using the 20"20 porcelain tiles as my tool and here is what I got. The living room is 13 1/3 ft deep x 18 1/3 ft wide. The window is app. 10ft wide. We are replacing the window with one that will have a larger center picture window and a smaller sliding window on each side. The normal arrangement for furniture is the back of the sofa to the window, centered. Two chairs angled on the wall where sofa is now in the pictures. An old recliner is in the area to the left of window as you enter the room. There is one bookcase that I now have on the wall that you face as you enter the room from the foyer. It's in the left corner with a small round table on the other side. Coffee and end tables too. We used to have an upright piano that took up alot of space but that is now at my son's house since he is the one who plays. Interests, hmmm... I am into genealogy and the bookcase holds pictures of ancestors. We also have two portraits of ancestors on the formal dining room wall, same wall as bookcase and its also the wall with the buffet on it. In the formal dining room, I also have two shadow boxes with engraved antique silverware from my husband's family, plus some other family treasures. We live in Florida. Most houses the age of ours are similiar. Our house is one of the larger homes, although not as large as many of the northern peoples' homes here on Houzz forums, or as fancy. I just want something that fits with the porcelain tile that we chose ( we have two dogs that love to run and play). I had wall to wall and just got sick of it. I love my area rugs, I know, not an in color that is "in" now but it will stay. Window treatments will change once we decide what to do with the furniture and new windows are installed. The walls are Pewter Vase - I thought it was a Sherwin Williams color but my paint strip doesn't say that. Its a nice netural gray, doesn't read purple in the room. At one time, I had thought about putting causal furniture in the room, without any area rugs. That was when my first grandson was a toddler and we used the area for floor puzzles and playing. However, the tile was too hard to sit on and we had an echo. I have another toddler grandson now and we have enough space for him to push his toys in a path around the foyer, living room, dining room, kitchen and into the family room. I don't forsee it being a problem to get new furniture but its another reason to consider price and style. Thanks for the comments so far. I appreciate your help.

Formal/elegant for a formal living room space, yet also functional and comfortable for lounging, TV, etc. Uh, that encompasses a lot of choices! And, you provide no picture of the space, the size, the kitchen area, or any thing else necessary to advise you? Like color? Budget? Preference on style? is there a fireplace? what kind? how will seating be arranged? do you need a console? do you want a farmhouse style, but on the formal side? or do you want more formal without farmhouse? do you want muted tones or color? maureen gave you some nice choices, but honestly, without pics AND more infor from you, we're throwing darts in the dark.

Too many pieces and they’re all the same. I would break up the set. Keep the two chairs and get a nice chesterfield sofa, for instance. It’s all the matchy pieces. When you have different pieces that compliment instead of match, they look more classic and less contrived. Simplifying the lines and adding color will also calm the look. Pair the chairs against one wall with a new small round table between, and place the sofa on the other. (If you prefer the sofa, then reverse this advice and keep one and get two new chairs. Maybe some pretty velvet wing chairs) PS, Wow, you’re really getting a lot of really bad, confusing advice in this thread 😬. They mean well, but that particular room is too small and needs less, not more. Just some pics after a really quick search to give you a basic idea
