Drywall returns on aluminium window: gaps too narrow

Hello everyone, DIYer here.

We have a no-trim aluminium sliding window just above our tiled shower. I recently removed the drywall above the shower due to some termite damage and rusted metal corner beads.

Having removed the drywall returns, I'm seeing the gap between the studs and the inside lip of the window frame is actually not wide enough to fit 1/2" drywall (see photo).

Furthermore, from the remaining paint on the window frame itself, it looks like that gap may never have been filled in the first place. I'm guessing the drywall was pushed in only as far as the lip (if that is the term), with no insulation in the remaining gap.

Should I prefill the stud-to-lip gaps with window foam sealant, then install the drywall returns, cutting them so they only go to the depth of the lip?

Is J-bead necessary on the drywall edge that is against the window?

Thanks in advance,
