Fruitless mulberry bark peeling off

Could someone please help me identify the problem with this fruitless mulberry. It was transplanted to the yard last year and did well. This summer however, the bark started to peel on one side. At first the tree didn’t seem to be affected, but now I see that the branches on that side are shorter and the leaves are black around the edges.

Can you tell me what the problem could be and a possible treatment? We live in Spain, and the garden guy isn’t helpful with this. Climate is similar to Sacramento CA, and this summer was not harsh. Tree is regularly watered.

Is the bark-less trunk on the southwest side? If so, and if you had a frosty but sunny spring it could be a sun scald. Sorry to say this, but regardless of the cause your tree is beyond repair.

if you have a warranty.. have it replaced ..

it was severely damaged at digging .... or transporting.. [like it was hanging out the back of the tailgate of a pickup.. rubbing on that spot] .... or upon delivery ...

it is probably healing the wound.. [cant quite tell by the pix} ...but that could take 5 to 10 years ... and it will need pruning to return it to a good shape over the years ...

in my area.. sun scald is usually near the ground.. and it is usually caused by winter sun damaging the bark.. and the cambium layer under the bark ...

its the failure of the cambium.. that causes the bark to separate ...

the damage you see above.. is showing the loss of the cambium.. its the vascular system of the tree ... moving energy down to store in the roots.. and in spring.. moving said stored energy up to leaf out and grow... so the lacking cambium.. is why you note the growth differences above ...

it may or may not recover.. but you will spend years looking at it and wondering.. and for many of us.. it just isnt worth it ...

replace it with a tree no bigger than half that size.. it will get established faster.. and outgrow the larger transplant in 3 to 5 years ... [and not hang out the back of the truck ...]

perhaps your guy is be evasive.. because he knows he screwed up ...

ps: improper watering can also add to all this.. you have a perfect lawn.. but you cant rely on lawn irrigation to properly water a huge transplant .. i also wonder if it is telephone poled.. planted too deep.. but if that were the fact.. the wound would be low to the ground... but all these things could add up ..

Cuzn. I looked up the pdf you mentioned. Not how I do my bark grafts, but there are probably as many variations of a given grafting technique as there are grafters. Konrad, who's a frequent poster here, does his a little differently, as well - but it's a graft that takes quite nicely, and it's easy to do. My technique: Behead the rootstock with your pruners. Make a single vertical slit in the rootstock bark. Make a long, sloping cut in the base of your scion - just as you would for a simple whip graft. Now, shave some bark off the two 'long' sides, to expose some cambium tissue on the lateral edges. Gently 'lift' the edges of the slit in the rootstock bark and slide the scion down into the slit, until the cambium at the 'top' of your sloping basal cut is just above the level of the beheaded top of the rootstock. I wrap the union and scion with parafilm, then overwrap with rubber band - or sometimes, just with a couple layers of masking tape, if it's something that will callus in rapidly, like pears. For nut trees, I do a 'sap-stopper' modification of the graft above - instead of completely beheading the rootstock, I just cut 3/4-7/8 of the way through the stock and break the top over, leaving it attached, to serve as a sap-drawer/pressure relief valve, as nut trees often tend to bleed excessively. After the scion calluses in and growth commences, you can come back and snip off the still-attached top of the rootstock. Osborn's technique, as outlined in the pdf, may actually be a sturdier graft, less prone to 'blow-out/break-out' than mine - might try a few that way this year. I have done simple whip grafts on persimmon, with 100% success rate, before someone told me that persimmons are hard to graft. (They're NOT. Wow, I guess there are more people trying this than I thought... thanks for the replies. I also tried in vain for several years to root hardwood cuttings from various mulberry trees in pots inside. Then last year I collected a giant "water sprout" which was much thicker than the pencil size which is so often recommended in the literature, but more like finger thickness. I also used much longer pieces, over 12 inches. I got 100% rooting success with pure perlite in gallon pots covered with a clear plastic dome. I had them in my sunroom on a seedling heat mat for the colder nights. It may just have been the particular tree I collected from, but I'm betting the large size of the cuttings, perhaps combined with the heat mat, made them root well. In any event, I collected from the same tree for this current experiment, using mostly same year large shoots, along with one or two with older wood. I also did mulch heavily with straw as glib suggested. I hope one of us at least has some success to report this spring! ps. apparently this type of rooting cuttings is routinely done by some people with pomegranate, and an appropriate soil mix is first put into the ground where the cutting is to go (see the recent post about rooting pomegranate on this forum)

We grow 3 different mulberry trees on the property. The tallest one is 5 y.o. Pakistan Mulberry- overloaded with fruit every April. Last year my young son used the fallen berries to fertilize his garden. Few months later I noticed mulberry seedlings all over his garden bed. Now, a year later, we have a luscious forest of young Pakistan Mulberries, some are already taller than me. I wonder if they will be fruit bearing? Also, I noticed some of them having different shaped leaves- not smooth oval ones but intricate cut pattern- would that by any chance indicate male sex of a tree?

Hi, I have a couple of questions regarding Mulberries: 1. I read that Morus rubra (the US native mulberry) only grows to 20' in the northeast - that it only grows to 50 or 70 in the south or mid west? I live in NJ and hope that the tree is a small one (as in around 20'). 2. Will the taste of Morus rubra's berries be significantly worse then the commercial M. alba x M. rubra hybrids, such as 'Illinois Everbearing'? 3. I really want(ed) to stick with the native variety (M. rubra), but don't want to significantly compromise on taste - could I graft a M. rubra limb onto my non-native M. alba x M. rubra hybrid (sapling) so that I have both varieties - I'll actually end up just keeping most of the tree M. rubra and only a single maintained limb of the original hybrid. 4. Will grafting the M. rubra onto the M. alba (x M. rubra) rootstock minimize the risk that M. rubra often experiences of root disease (spread by M. alba)? I figure that since the roots are not M. rubra's (at least I think they don't use M. rubra to do grafts) this would be an advantage. 5. Is M. rubra self-fertile - some sites say yes - and some say that it varies. I guess if it's female, the M. alba x M. rubra self-fertile limb would fertilize it. 6. Do you think that a 10' tall and wide Mulberry tree provides all the fruit one would want; if so, I might keep it pruned small. Thanks, Steve

Thanks very much for the quick reply. Really appreciate the advice. This is the second year after transplant - first year tree was fine. Another question- would trimming the sides of the wound and painting it with ‘tree wound’ paint help it survive? This is my daughter’s house and she is not ready to just pull it out.

No paint. The tree will heal itself, if it can. The sides of the wound start to callous over to eventually close it up. It takes a long time as Ken notes, and it may not make it.

tree time is counted in decades... it is not surprising that an injury under the bark.. did not show during the first season ....
