Need kitchen island ideas...Pics please!
Comments (10)Mine is 36(?) by 78, or will be when the countertops come in. My old one, was an old dresser with 2 huge drawers and 2 smaller drawers, and we put a couple of counter height bar stools on the back. It was awesome too. I got a great deal of satisfaction out of repurposing the old dresser. My new island, one end houses a trash can. The other end houses my baking stuff and cutting board which serves to extend the island if needed. I initially was thinking to lower that baking end for a baking center but then decided that for no more than I bake, it would serve me better as one height and I just left the drawers on that end. Comments (5)Thanks all. Handymac, I really appreciated the detail you provided. Unfortunately, it wasn't by any means an easy solution to my issue, so I've been mulling over. My thought process is to leave the cabinet frame intact, remove most of the external pieces ourselves (panels, trim work, doors, hinges, and drawer fronts), do whatever initial prepwork we can, and take them to a cabinetry shop/paint store to be sprayed and then protected with some finish. Then, we'll re-finish the frame in place somehow. The posts are going to be a pain. DH built a very sturdy steel frame to support the island overhang and those posts aren't going anywhere. Bobsmyuncle/brickeyee, the idea of a glaze might work very well. Can anyone suggest what color to use, to move from the current reddish tones, to more of a gray? We do have pieces with which we can experiment. I contacted the MFR and the current topcoat is a catalyzed conversion varnish. Is this the same as a post-catalyzed varnish? Thanks -- oldbat2be...See MoreNew kitchen island... top ideas please!
Comments (11)I think that desk will make a cute island. Do you want the work surface to be just within the boundaries of the three raised edges? I think I might make a fourth edge and a center support. That would give you some size flexibility and you could check out remnants at a stone place with more leeway- cause you want something to set on top. I also think rolling dough(which I do a lot of) would be difficult in the confines created by the walls- but that may not be a concern you share. Also check out Craigslist and Habitat for Humanity restore. They both often have cabinets, stone topped tables, what not that you could take a part and repurpose....See MoreBefore & after kitchen - need island ideas please!!!
Comments (13)Hi all - Here is the finished island if anyone is interested in an update! Since December when I first posted, we've been busy with installing hvac, re-working (cleaning and greasing all the window cranks, replacing cracked windows & glazing, scraping, sanding, priming & painting) the millions of windows, rebuilding the retaining wall that holds the hill that we're built into up, etc. The most fun project - by far - was the island! We've been trying to really watch our money on every project & we really got lucky on all the components: Base cabinets we got NEW at Lowe's on a closeout sale. They were still marked kind of high - drawer unit was still $150 - but there were not enough to do a whole kitchen & were just taking up shelf space so I asked if they could do better. We got the units we needed for $30/per unit!! We had to sand off the finish, prime & paint - but we're used to that! DH built the surrounding cabinetry with 2 sheets of plywood & some trim scraps to jazz it up a bit. The island top is made from unused railroad car flooring scraps. It is 2 1/2" maple & looks like cutting board/butcher block. DH routered the edge then we stained it dark & put a satin finish on it. The pieces were $5 each & I think there are 8-10 pieces in the top. We traded some stained glass for the bar stools. Please ignore the red paper on the floor. We were still working on the windows when snapped these shots. Next up - exterior paint. I'll be checking in over at the home decorating forum for some input on that one! Thanks to everybody for the great ideas. We really appreciate it! Here is a link that might be useful: new island!...See MoreK&D at the lake
