Funny you should mention The Glass House. I just, this morning, watched part of Netflix’s Amazing Vacation Rentals and one segment featured the Conneticut house. You too can spend the night there! (I think they said its only rented out 4 nights a year at $30,000.)

Only thing is, I'd want sliding panels with a styrofoam core to close at night to keep it warm as there is no way all that glass is energy efficient.

I was about to start a campaign for a GTG at the Farnsworth house for a special exhibit including all the original furnishings, when Covid hit. Oh well.

The house in Hudson Valley is lovely but I wouldn't want a butterfly roof, or a flat roof either. Leaks, you know.

Yes bpath, apparently the glass house roof is a chronic issue. That's why I liked the angled roof, but not butterfly...but you'd still need to accommodate the water on the downside of the roof to protect any foundation.

I hope our retirement home is the one we're in; unless we find a great one on the lake!

ETA: Actually, I AM retired and my husband has drastically cut back on his hours (self-employed)!

I am boring, I want a retirement house within walking distance of a grocery store and a highly rated medical center.

palimpsest I'm with you! something with a small, easy yard and a walk score above 90. but I love the house Annie Deighnaugh posted! if I could get a small version in my ideal location, that would be the dream.

we're retiring in Vancouver though, so something like that would probably be like $3 million. I'll feel lucky if we can even get a boring house.

Glass house is about 1800 square feet with a 10.5 ft. ceiling,

Farnsworth is about 1500 square feet with a 9+ foot ceiling.

Unfortunately I think both are really for single people. Glass house has separate guest bedrooms in a brick bunker that is a near complete inversion of the glass house.

Farnsworth is probably going to have to be moved because the 100 year flood plain is now the every-couple-years flood plane and the interior millwork has been damaged or destroyed more than once.

I wonder what the upkeep budget is for the two houses, given the maintenance issues. Fallingwater is in the millions I believe for the main house itself and it still had obvious ongoing damage when I was there last year.

I don't know about upkeep because they have so many buildings on the property where the glass house is...the guest house with the art museum with the rotating art, the sculpture building, that other building that is devoid of a single right angle and there's the in ground pool too.

Friends of ours just bought my dream retirement home - damn them LOL! It is a single story with two masters with ensuites on on a single level. Ideal for company or when a carer is necessary. There is also a 3rd bedroom which would accomodate a queen and bunk beds, so great for family. Large kitchen which could accomodate a table for 12 for family gatherings. Ticks all my boxes. It is on 1/2 an acre with low maintenance landscaping with room for flower beds if so desired. Not walking distance to much, but a very short car/cab ride to everything one would need, including medical services and a hospital.

well, hopefully if self-driving cars ever really become a thing, I will be a whole lot more open to the suburbs or country. but I genuinely do enjoy walking to stuff. I want to be that old lady always seen pulling a grocery cart to and from the subway. sounds like a really good way to stay spry. except in my version, I hope my grocery cart will be one of these little robots.

I love that little cart. My auntie just moved into a senior apartment building, where about the on,y drawback is that she’s upstairs and the laundry room is on the first floor. It would be okay except that she uses a walker. There’s a communal cart/wagon that she has to go downstairs to get, put her walker in it and go back uostairs, load her laundry in, put the walker on top, and go downstairs. That little robot cart would be great, great fun, and a great say to meet people.

I would also accept a pack drone, so it wouldn't get in people's way (and stay out of reach from troublemakers).

eld6161 those are SO adorable! sometimes I read stories about jerks who occasionally vandalize these. it makes me irrationally sad. I keep joking with my husband "be nice to the AI.... they're taking notes and plotting".

Topic drift, but speaking of taking notes and plotting, there are certain subjects that I will not talk about in front of Alexa or Google, because they are definitely listening.

I sketched out my dream retirement house but for SOME REASON my husband won't let me knock down our perfectly good house and put it on our lot!

1. Main level primary bedroom with a main floor den.

2. Basement one bedroom apartment along with a basement rec room and studio for my husband.

3. Upstairs, two bedrooms and a bath that could convert to a small one bedroom apartment for my kid if he takes awhile to launch.

It's perfect - gentle density, renters pay my property taxes and I can stay in my own house forever(ish).

My dream retirement home has three different faces. The reason is that my in-town location of my desired area is limited in choices and size due to smaller lots. Originally we wanted to built but that is looking less likely. Whatever I end up buying will probably be a full remodel. This next house will be a small age in place home. All choices will be easy maintenance. I do want a lap pool though. One thing I really miss since selling my home is the pool. I swam for 45 minutes four times a week. Since then I have quickly gone down hill.

This is one house we both liked although we would have to enlarge the master a bit.

Anyway, realistically the way prices are going down here, if I want to stay right in town, my next house will be a little shack in the color of the above but with a lap pool lol.
