worst problem with kitchen design obsession
Comments (12)This all sounds like me. I have not watched tv in ages nor read a book much. We are doing the kitchen and also extending, so the kitchen is moving and getting bigger. We also are adding a den, extending the master bedroom and re-doing our master bathroom. There are just so many parts of the house being fixed (finally!) and I have so many details to worry about. I have been waiting my whole life to do a project like this and am afraid I am becoming remodel-zilla. Trying to keep to an undetermined budget, is tough too. We know what the contractor will be paid (as long as I don't get too many more ideas here) and we own a good portion of the materials (most have been on site for 3+ years now), but there any layout decisions, despite having that worked out 3 years ago. Things are getting added or taken off almost daily. This go round, I am tweaking and adjusting way more than I thought possible. I think as the demo gets closer my mind is coming up with more and more options that have to all be decided asap and seem to be all tied in together somehow. Arghhh... I can't imagine how hard something like this would be if I had not done half the planning and buying a few years ago (before it was put on hold). I know some people walk into HD and put together a layout and accessories in one day, but that is not my style nor is it true for just about anyone here, lol... At least we have found each other... Dh wakes up every morning to a new thought or question from me thanks to my late nights on GW. I have learned not to email him too late or he will know just how late I stayed up working on it! I still have so much more to think about and finalize. It does not help that I work as a r.e. agent and want to critique almost every house's kitchen layout and choices. I have to hold my tongue and keep all my GW ideas to myself. Work had better start soon or my brain will explode ;)...See MoreBest and worst of your kitchen?
Comments (30)We remodeled our kitchen three years ago and I love everything about it. It's not perfect because I had to work within the footprint I had but I did a pretty good job designing a new one if I must say so myself. It's hard to pick out a best thing but if I had to, I would probably say the refrigerator drawers. We had to put in a counter-depth French door refrigerator and the only place for it was on the other side of the island...not too convenient. I countered that little piece of inconvenience by putting in refrigerated drawers on the island. I keep all the fruits and veggies in the top drawer and drinks in the bottom. Everything that requires food prep is right at my fingertips. If I had to pick out a worst thing, it would probably be the island outlet. Because of all the drawers in the island, the only place to put the outlet was on the back side of the island. It would have been more convenient on the side but it wouldn't fit. It's only a problem when I use my Kitchen Aid mixer, requiring me to walk around and plug it in. Not such a terrible thing since I don't use the mixer that often anymore. I went from a U-shaped kitchen with a peninsula cook top to a center island with six feet of pure work space. I love, love, love it!...See MoreBest and worst kitchen remodel decisions are....
Comments (32)BEST: 1) visiting GW Kitchens -- I learned so much about what products were out there, finishes, space saving ideas, and looking at finished kitchens helped me crystallize what I liked and wanted and what could fit in my budget. This is where I learned about Ikea, Barker, frameless constructon, pullout trash, drawers instead of cabinets, spice pullouts, and more. It helped to know about all of this BEFORE sitting down with a kitchen designer and contractor. Add to that posting my layout here and on (RIP) Ikeafans for suggestions, even though I had little flexibility in my space. 2) restoring a window that had been covered by a previous owner. It made such a difference! 3) LED lighting units in the ceiling (cans, or in my case disc retrofits due to ducts in the ceiling) 4) which is more connected to #1-- doing a lot of shopping online and in local stores, again familiarizing myself with products and prices before buying, then watching for sales and coupons and getting great deals on, well, almost everything, mostly in advance of starting the job. This includes buying scratch/dent appliances - no regrets there! drawers, roll out trays in the pantry, asymmetrical corner base cab, offset sink drain, larger single sink...LOL almost everything.... WORST: 1) Waffling too much on counter choice then unfortunately choosing a not-the-best fabricator 2) trying to help out my unemployed brother by asking him to refinish the kitchen floor (he had done it in his own house some time ago with great results -- it was a disaster in mine) 3) not getting a slightly more powerful hood 4) not getting the drawer-in-drawer for my deep enough utensil drawer....See MoreDoes anyone use tile for kitchen floor any more?
Comments (8)I find that with increasingly open floor plans, it is very difficult to have tile in the kitchen. Wood works beautifully, looks good, easy on the legs and not really a huge water spilling problem. However, I totally understand the desire for tile. I love a nice stone floor in the kitchen. If your kitchen is not open to a big public room, then you could go ahead with a more traditional kitchen floor....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
