I am replacing the old leaky roof . Originally Originally, it is the thinner onw. Thats

qhat everyone usef 20-30 years ago. Now Now, thick shingled are more common apprently Would you recommend switching to thick shingles?

I thought of using cedar, but when I priced it, it was way too expensive and didn't make sense to do it. And I'm sorry to say, but if you're trying to grow as much food as you can, two 4x4 beds are not very much and I think that is a lot of money for two small beds. I have one long bed 12" high, 11ft long and 4ft wide. I have four beds 12" high, 4ft x 4ft. I made them with Pine because I had some already and didn't have to buy much more. It's actually been about 8 years since we built them and they are ready to be replaced now. Now I want to double the square footage that I can grow in. So I want to build… Two beds 12" high, 16ft long, 4ft wide Six beds 12" high, 6ft long, 4ft wide That doubles my growing space. I don't feel I need deeper beds, because vegetables are annuals and I've read somewhere recently that they don't really need 18" deep beds. 12" is just right for me and I don't mind bending and kneeling. So less wood. I priced what cedar I could find and it was going to cost me over $600. to build those beds. I called 12 lumber yards and only two had cedar and they weren't the dimensions I wanted either. Finally, one lumber yard, said he was steering people to use Eastern Hemlock rough sawn, which is very inexpensive. It is more rot resistant than Pine but less than Cedar. Estimates were 5yrs for Pine, 8-10 years for Hemlock, and 15yrs for Cedar. I priced the Hemlock and it was going to cost me $198. to build the same beds. So, if I built the hemlock and had to replace them in 10 years for another $200. It would still be $200. less than building the cedar beds, and would last me 5yrs longer.

WE are building two homes that I designed for my girlfriend and for her brother. We looked at both and I preferred the certainteed for the realistsic looks and color. The grooves were deeper and shadow lines heavier and felt a bit heavier but I never really checked the actual weight /thickness. The GP was about $50/ square less if I remember right and it was decided to go with GP. One went with a tan or taupe color I cant remember exact name. My girlfriends house is on the lake and we chose the steel blue /gray color. It wasnt as deep blue as the certainteed but we used a white trex pvc trim for all the rakes, fascias, freiezes etc and this helped make it read as a deeper blue. All in all Im still very pleased with the look. The quality appears to be pretty decent as much as one can tell with it up less than 6 months. Fading apears to be less of a concern with modern manufacturing techniches. I personally love the look of cedar shingles but this gives that look with out the continuous maintainence of staining /painting. It also gives options for some fun colors. The texture is nice either way and its about the same cost as stucco we found. Everyone thats seen it loves them both. Some colors look better than others and certainteeds looked better in some and GP in others . There are several other manufacturers out there but these are the two I found looked most realistic. I had a client use the certainteed and likes it as well. One other I really like is by quality edge. It was also a bit more expensive but I liked therealistic look and colors pretty well that I saw a few years back at a trade show. Good luck

Guess I got it rong? I thot the 2" rigid PLUS the T&G pine was too much so the paper being about zero would be a dandy fix. Not so. Don't know how thick the pine might be. Facing reality I'd forget the pine and hang as much rigid as practicable where possible then paint over it and live with it. I insulated my steel garage door with 2 thicknesses of foam total R-10 as I recall. That's all that would fit. Really helps. 1.5" thick. 10/13 = 0.7692307692307692307.... not too bad. It's only 23% colder at that end. :-)

Of what the shingles are that are existing. Shingle or shakes? Shingles are typically an even butt thickness (usually 3/8"), shakes are somewhat irregular, they call them medium (1/2" - 3/4" butt thickness) or heavy (3/4" - 1/1/8" butt thickness) shakes.

It is tapered.. Isthat shakes? Currently, what i have is about 1/2” before it tapers down

Typically bit shingles and shakes are both tapered, exception being barn shakes as they are 3/8" one end to the other (and not used on a roof, lol).

You have shingles on that roof. Those are not shake shingles.

Shingles are sawn on both sides; shakes are usually sawn on on side & split on the other.

Yeah, looking at that pic ci_lantro is correct. Probably red cedar but no way to be 100% sure from here.

Where I live cedar shingles are not allowed we live in a major fire zone and those go up like tinder .

Here's a list of all the cedar shingles my supplier carries. You'll have to find out what is available locally. I would personally go with red cedar with a 5/8" butt, they will look better and last longer. Be prepared for sticker shock...

That is the thick one? As I understand it, there are only two kinds around here, thick or thin. The roofer called the thin ones royal.

Royals are 24" cedar shingles. Only royalty can afford those. You really need to see samples of what is available, cedar is very expensive right now. Check out this site, the names of various shingles/shakes can vary regionally.

The old ones were Royal Blue. One before that was royal gold. We replaced a small section in the back with Royal Blue. The roofer couldn’t find matching royal gold. The price for the thick ones wasn’t shockingly high. It is about 30% higher than the royal gold we put the roof 25 years ago.
