How to paint over venetian plaster?
Comments (5)Did you finish the wall with paste wax (standard finish over VP)? Or perhaps shellac? If you did either, you're going to need to sand quite a bit to remove all of the finish, since VP tends to have high and low points (that's why we like it right?) :o) After you sand it throughly away, I'd use a better primer, like Sherwin williams Seals and Bonds (for shiny surfaces) just in case. If you didn't use a final coat and just burnished, it shouldn't need any more than primer (especially the latex stuff)...No matter what I'd step up a level on that primer. The SW stuff will be a better base no matter what they do. The worst case scenario is that if this does not work (and it should but if the wax is thick it's a bigger problem) they can do an all over skim coat of plaster (just regular stuff you use for drywall) over the top and start over. (then prime then paint)....See MoreHow to paint over 50 yr old polyurethane (shellac?)
Comments (3)Thanks, paintguy...I did try the sanding and it came off pretty easy. Although I ended up with "sparkle dust" all over the floor, the hand sanding didn't cause it to fly everywhere so cleanup was relatively easy! My husband said it's actually varnish, not shellac. The primer went on easily, hopefully the paint will too....See MoreHow to paint over faux troweled plaster glazed walls?
Comments (6)The glaze does present an adhesion hurdle for the new color. And most of the "paint and primer in one" products do not work as well as a traditional primer. Therefore, I would recommend full priming the surface with a bonding primer and then top coating with a quality finish paint, usually at least two coats. Roll as much of it as you can, with a nap suited for the variations in the texture, probably a 1 inch thick nap. If it's much thinner you may end up fighting with the paint to get in all the crevices....See Morehelp! how do i paint over polyurethaned knotty pine ?
Comments (51)Hello, we have a small sunroom ( western side of the house) has knotty pine wood on the walls, ceiling and up into the cut out Skylight areas. The area up in the sky light reflected drip like black water marks on it so we decided to paint the ceiling (had the skylights replaced three months ago and we know the Knotty Pine is in fine shape otherwise). We decided to paint the ceiling, including up in the recessed sky light areas. started with the Bin primer, put two coats, then started to see an Amber-colored film coming through. Unfortunately the painter then added two coats of a latex paint. The amber color is still coming through. I'm wondering if it's old sap that which from the heat of the sun coming through the skylights. Suggestions on how I tackle this project at this point considering we have two layers of den and two layers of latex paint and the amber color is coming through just like we simply did a white wash....See Moreprius2ny
