My Memorial Day is about 8ft tall by about 3ft. Very fragrant, blooms big blousy orchidy pink blooms.

Mine has been disease free in my no spray garden.

get Eglantyne bare root from David Austin. Mine got taller than I am in its first year, up here in zone 5b. I can't imagine how big it would get in a milder climate.

Parfum de Paris has a weird shape (one super tall cane plus a tiny bush at bottom). It doesn't have bush beauty like Dee-lish (vase-shape & dense bush which get up to 6 feet). Mine is 6 feet x 3 feet, which will be bigger in a warm zone (my zone 5 winterkill roses to a few canes below 1 foot). Below was taken near 90 F end of June (after I brutally pruned it down to 1 foot in spring). It gets my vote as #1 disease-resistant & drought and heat tolerant, it's a 7th-year-own-root:

My second vote would go for own-root Princess Charlene de Monaco. It's at least 2 feet taller than Dee-lish. Mine got 12+ canes at over 7 feet tall right now, I chopped off all to cut for the vase, leaving one cane behind at 2 feet taller than Dee-lish.

Below is bush shot of PcdM, note Dee-lish pink bloom at right edge, and older PcDM canes at 2 feet above it, plus newer blooms (3rd flush) at 2 feet below). It's NOT a dense bush like Dee-lish Pic. was taken last August.

My only complaint about PcDM is the bush have a bunch of tall canes sticking up (blooming at the tall end), versus Dee-lish is a vase-shaped shrub & thick and dense with leaves and covered from head to toe with blooms. Below PcDM as 3th-year-own-root, now it's twice taller in its 4th-year (9 feet tall).

Below is another shot of Dee-lish to compare with PcDM above. This one got over 7 feet tall since made a mistake of using Plant-Tone (has chemical nitrogen fertilizer). Pic. taken August in its 2nd flush.

Among my 145 own-root roses, no bush can be dense & tall like Dee-lish (even in 2nd and 3rd flushes) Savannah is tall and dense like a thicket but gives 1/2 the amount of blooms and Savannah doesn't have the perfect round-vase-shape of Dee-lish. Austins like Evelyn throws messy octopus canes in its latter flushes.

Just saw Aaron's comment on Eglantyne, best as grafted on Dr.Huey. Rose park has 4 of them and they are tall & dense, but stingy, like 5 blooms for spring flush. My own-root Eglantyne was pathetic at less than 2' x 2'. Scepter'd Isle gets huge as own-root, but stingy compared to French roses in hot & dry.

Besides Dee-lish, Sweet M. is another (much wider & taller), below pic. is 3rd-year own-root this August , in 4 hrs. of morning sun. Sweet M. doesn't have the vase-shape of Dee-lish, but it's wider & taller .. now at 7 feet tall and 4 feet wide. Sweet M. is way better looking in bush beauty than Savannah (long pause between flushes and NOT a continuous bloomer like Sweet M.). Sweet M is a continuous bloomer (bush is very wide with many canes), versus short pause for Dee-lish and PcDM. My garden is no spray since 1998.

Oh, and Memorial Day is basically thornless

Spirit of Freedom is large and very fragrant. Decently healthy here, so must be better there.

I second Sprit of Freedom in bush-beauty .. saw that at rose park in spring with tons of rain and it got more blooms than leaves, very impressive. It's 5' x 3' in my zone 5 as grafted-on-Dr.Huey at rose park. Does it throw messy octopus canes like Evelyn in latter flush? Thank you.

Off the top of my head, Memorial Day and The McCartney rose are both huge pink HTs and ultra-fragrant. And they both bloom extremly well all year. But given your needs of tall and wide to block the shed, you might want something more big DA or OGR-ish.

Brpther Cadfael meets all your requirements, except it might not rebloom enough to please you--not sure how that would be in San Jose, one of the best rose growing areas in my opinion. I grow Brother C in zone 7, hot and dry SW Idaho, so we have a winter. I've grown BC since he first was sold in the US. He is grafted on Dr Huey and has always been 8-9 feet tall at maturity and about 7 feet wide. This can vary some. He has a big spring flush of nicely scented blooms, but the rebloom is just small pops of blooms until fall, when there is a small flush. No blackspot here and no spraying. Diane

I'm glad that Susan mentioned The McCartney rose, that would be my top choice if I have a sunny garden. My garden is too shady so I plant Austin water-hogs instead.

The McCartney is #1 favorite among Pakistan rose grower in extremely hot climate up to 121 F. I hang out in their Facebook group since roses that survive heat are also winter-hardy for my zone 5. Below is the rating for The McCartney rose in HMF:

Below is the pic. of The McCartney rose in a pot posted by Tahir Khan in Pakistan, he informed me that it's great in vase & continuous bloomer. He fertilizes his 200+ pots with rice hulls, molasses and cow manure. HMF states that it's 6 feet by 2 feet, but it's much wider if grown in the ground. It's prone to mildew, thus doesn't get EXCELLENT rating on disease-resistant like Dee-lish and Sweet Mademoiselle (mine is 7' x 4' but is larger in a warmer climate). My zone 5 kills roses to the crown or less than 1 foot in spring.

That's a beautiful photo of The McCartney rose, which is a parent of Frederic Mistral. FM has a gorgeous fragrance and perfect blooms that do well in a vase. Mine was grafted on Dr Huey, and I grew this rose for many years. It was about 6 X 6 feet, so might not be quite tall enough to suite you. Diane

I grew Frederic Mistral as own-root, it was 4' x 3' in my zone 5. Fred had a long pause in rebloom but with healthy leaves. Fred has the nickname "Mr. Thrips" but thrips is not a problem in my zone 5.

Oh boy, that photo of The McCartney rose by Straw just made it too tempting, even though my roses do get mildew in the garden, and I promised myself to only pick a disease resistant variety. Do you know if mildew susceptibility is the same on own root, on Dr Huey, or on Multiflora?

There are a number of roses that are marketed as climbers since they get large, but can be grown free-standing, although of course you could also grow a more lax climber with some support. Just throwing some ideas out there, of variable levels of fragrance and rebloom: John Cabot, Polka, Kiss Me Kate, Laguna, Aloha, Pearly Gates. Personally, if I lived in San Jose, I'd go to the rose gardens and see if there was something that caught my eye (or even one of the botanic gardens for something that isn't a rose - gasp!).

Are you able to do a search on Houzz? If you are, try searching for Fr. Jerome's old posts on the Antique Rose forum. The photos of his tea roses are unforgettable. I believe his zone is closer to yours than are most of us. You may get some good ideas from some of those old posts.

Michael: HMF states that Dr. Huey is susceptible to mildew, and I agree. The comments in HMF about Munstead Wood (grafted-on-Dr.Huey): it's susceptible to mildew, and I also saw blackspots on Munstead Wood (grafted-on-Dr.Huey) at nearby rose park. However, I never see blackspots nor mildew on my OWN-ROOT Munstead Wood for the past 7 years. My soil is rock hard alkaline clay.

I worked in San Jose for 1 year back in 1987 and the climate was sunny but dry. For such a dry climate, grafted-on-Dr.Huey would be best with less frequent watering. Multiflora needs more frequent watering than Dr.Huey, and multiflora is better suited for higher-rain climate.

Own-root can be drought-tolerant like Dr.Huey if the root is deep and spreading like the disease-resistant varieties (Dee-lish and Sweet M). Right now we have 3 weeks of practically zero rain, and those 2 are the only own-roots that have healthy leaves with once a week watering.
