How do you collect iris seeds before they get away from you?

I record the date of pollenation, and pick my pods around 8 to 10 weeks later, and just store them inside until they are ready to open. Comments (3)I'm assuming that you are referring to Clitoria ternatea. 1. Seed maturation will depend on local conditions. 2. Daily observation of an individual pod will give you information on the time of shattering i.e. as to when it "throws' its seeds out to reseed itself", note this time data. 3. Use the data to determine the last point before shattering and utilize to collect the individual pods. 3. Optimum harvesting will require frequent observations, note: in practise this means daily inspection - as the pods will not mature simultaneously. 4. Comments (108)Update on the seeds I covered with boiling water, rinsed in cold water and placed between damp paper towels which were rinsed every day.. Eight days out and one of six seeds is swollen and has a root. The other five look the same as they did at the start. It seems that nicking the seeds, (I do it with kitchen scissors) allows moisture to enter the seeds more uniformly. With nicking, boiling water, sanding, etc. they will sprout faster, but given time and moisture they will sprout without treatment. Happy gardening!...See MoreHow long do I leavee seed pods on?

2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoYes! I only did a few because a lot had split by the time I got to the project, but I now have about 9 seeds to try. These are off 'Aida', which is the hardiest C x williamsii. Again they are just open pollinated...I will probably sow them outside and see if they can fend for themselves.
I gave a ton of cuttings of 'Aida', 'Korean Fire' and 'April Remembered' to McLean Nursery, so those will be available for sale locally, in Baltimore, in a couple years. Somewhere else on GW is a thread from about 10 years ago where I debate the approach I will take to pruning camellias. Well, I have made my choice. In my very humble opinion from 30+ years of growing them, camellias, deep down, want to be trees. The Korean Fire at Udel is a huge shrub and shows no sign of stopping its skyward journey...neither does mine. YMMV though, I'm not quite sure this is a gardening technique I would advocate, per se. Still I'm aggressively pruning them to have single trunks if they were already big; smaller ones I will now start training when they are planted. Here is my KF getting a chop (well chainsawin' anyhow) to one of its stems.
