Converting a 1 sided firreplace to a 2 sided
Comments (4)Wow! Even w/o seeing what you have, you describe a full interior room dividing fireplace that is probably concrete block and brick/stone faced, with a one sided fire chamber in the living room/dining side. It could be openly constructed in a cathedral ceiling enviroment, or in a two story and supports some floor joists above it. You want to see the fire in the kitchen though, so this guy is going to remove the firebrick, which is the only easy part, as it's just the interior facing that keeps the regular concrete products from disintegrating from the heat, and then he's going to blow a large hole into the block, or if it's a real old house...brick, rocks, mud, trash (even new homes get their share of fill products) clean through to the other side. I would sincerely look at the date on his insurance policy papers before he even starts the work, cause I picture a scary situation trying to keep an "unknown" construction (the guy cutting into the fireplace did not build it), and very heavy chimney structure above still standing after a bomb goes through the lower middle of it. I would really try to find the person who built it originally, to ask what it's core is made up of, and then find somebody with a lot of previous experience doing what you want. I can't imagine a see through alteration being safe enough without lots of added support modifications not needed before, since it was not originally designed to support a tunnel. Just my humble opinion. Good Luck!...See MoreSingle sided fireplace to double sided in/outdoor-Can it be done?
Comments (4)Its possible, but not likely. If its masonry, the fireplace offers alot of support for the chimney above. Double sided fireplaces have double lintels to support both sides if the fireplace. Also, it might not draft properly, the chimney size is realated to the fireplace opening. If you introduce more air ( a second side ) it could dilute draft and draw poorly. Also do you realy want a double sided fireplace open to a screened in porch? Fireplaces dont offer much R value and that sure would be a cold place to have open to the main living area, not to mention insects and rodents. Glass doors dont seal that well....See More2 sided fireplace - gas vs. woodburning
Comments (20)We have an extremely well insulated house (it's ICF), and installed a 2-way gas FP between the living room and breakfast/kitchen area, and a woodstove in the lower level walkout TV room. Both are in the center of the house and are intended to be backup heat in case of power outages. For short ones we have crucial things (including the electric FP starter) hooked up to a partial house generator, but if the Eastern power grid goes out again for 4+ days in the winter instead of the summer, we'll be happy to have the FP and WS. Although we use the woodstove in December and January to burn the wood from the trees we cut down to clear the lot (14 years later we're using the last of them) and ease the load on the geothermal furnace, we usually use the 2-way FP for about a half hour first thing in the morning in the late fall, winter, and early spring. We have 9' ceilings, no vaults or open plan, but wide openings and excellent circulation. There's makeup air for the woodstove and an HRV for the house. The tighter the house, the smaller the FP or woodstove to not overheat the rooms. Anne...See Morewhat to put either side of linear fireplace, 10' spaces!?
Comments (4)Look at how high you need to mount the TV. You should have an entertainment center on one side. Move the TV from over the fireplace to that area. Then you can have a large, beautiful piece of art over the fireplace for a spectacular focal point. If you do built-ins, keep them to about four or five feet high for a horizontal counterpoint with the fireplace. Something like this:...See Moredecoenthusiaste
