Fireplace renovation/makeover

I’m looking to do something to my giant fireplace. As you can see in the picture it’s just very big and sticks out from the wall pretty far so the TV just sits on a really deep ledge. I have some inso ideas to add a shiplap wall above and around the insert. Has anyone done something like this? How much of the existing structure do i need to remove vs adding framing to the top of what’s already there? Thanks in advance for the insights!!

This is a direct vent gas fireplace where the vent goes straight out the back through the wall. You can frame around this to whatever depth you want that is less than the depth of the front of the fireplace. You can notch out the crown molding on the top of the mantel to accommodate the thickness of the wall you build around it and just leave the mantel in place, or you can remove the mantel and re-frame the fireplace and replace the tile if you want to create a complete new look. From the looks of the depth, you could build a wall unit with cabinets and shelves around it and leave a recess above for the TV.

Not sure what else you are asking.

Thanks everyone - yes we are keeping the red it looks great with the new tile, and gives our living room some warmth and color! The contractors are coming back to do the kitchen backsplash next week (after counters go in tomorrow) so they need to touch up some of the wall patch, there are a couple spots that need attention before we do the touch up paint. Of course it will look much better with the paint repaired but I was too excited not to share. The hearth will be easier to keep clean and it's much safer than the raised heath. In fact the doors fit perfectly this way because they would have overlapped the top more if they could not extend down below where the hearth was before.

I was able to fly in and see the house before i put the offer in. As for the feathery /spidery thing. Thats nothing more than a whole bunch of dried peppers. They had a lot of dust on them too. I measured the ceiling because i am tall and my daughter in a giant. ey are actually a bit over 8ft so its more of a photo problem than a real problem. my style runs minimal to mid century esque so i actually like the dark/white photo above too.

BeverlyFLADeziner, I did. lots and lots of videos… yes i have to admit i got cold feet early on and tried to get a bunch of the mortar off ( if u can believe there was actually more) the mortar is too white and kind of looks more like German smear than overgrout. the video tutorial i watched used white mortar but i think their tile format was bigger so i ended up with more mortar than brick 🤦‍♀️

Do you have a gas line already plumbed to the fireplace? If so, you just need some gas logs for the conversion. Otherwise, get some quotes from local plumbers for running the gas line, that's the most difficult part. Installing gas logs is very easy and the plumber can do that after the gas line is run.
