Is boxwood blight in The Triangle NC (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill)?

Janelle Hoskins

My full and part sun garden in Chapel Hill, NC (Zone 7b) predominantly consists of flowering perennials, carexes, and grasses.

The garden also has a small number of boxwood balls that are pruned loosely and I'd like to add more because the garden looks very bare in winter. However, I'm concerned about investing in lots of boxwoods because I keep hearing about boxwood blight. I have yet to see it my garden though and wonder if others are seeing it in The Triangle.

If the blight is in this area, can anyone suggest any alternatives for Zone 7b? I am looking for evergreen shrubs that can be pruned into mounds or globes that are between 2-3' wide and high. Many online sources suggest small leaf hollys as alternatives for boxwoods but I have also seen reviews that they don't grow successfully in our area.

I'm interested to hear your experiences.
