Bona Mega vs Traffic - can you do both?

My contractor used Bona Mega One as a sample (bottom of the picture). The 1 coat looks the best out of the options here (Absco Nextgen is also an option 2nd from the top), and didn’t yellow our white oak floor.

I read about Bona Traffic and asked if they have that as an option. He said he would do 2 coats of Mega and the final coat of Traffic “because it is much harder.” Can someone explain to me if this is a standard practice?

Any other feedback or suggestions are welcomed!

Using two coats of mega and finalizing with Traffic is standard for a cheaper traffic system. This causes matching issues in the future if, you bring someone new in or the original installer changes their process. You will have difficulty matching sheen.

Finishes have different clarity levels. It's best to stay with one product line throughout. Also, Traffic HD is a ceramic finish, Mega One is not. Having two to three coats of a ceramic finish is better than one. Expect to pay more for a real Traffic system.

Bona would say to 1) stain 2) Intense Seal 3) two coats of traffic

Loba (me) would say -) stain 2) Loba Easy Prime 3) 2 coats of Supra or Supra AT (which does have ceramic

I've done two coats of Traffic over one or two coats of sealer and it's been good for 10-15 years so far. The Bona literature does not suggest 3 coats (on the bottle it says 1 coat sealer, two coats Traffic), though I can't imagine it hurts, other than in the pocketbook.

i just got the matte finish on plain old (new) white oak in my kitchen remodel. They used amber stain because they said it would match rest of house best (old white oak floors that have yellowed). Even though I might have preferred lighter I was OK with that. But decided to hold my ground and asked them to use the matte finish which the floor guys were sort of against. I love the finished product!! It's super smooth, no shine and makes a more modern clean look. It dried nearly instantaneously and they did the whole thing in a day from sanding to top finish. Amazing what new products and technology have done to transform floor finishing. (I last had floors done in around 2001 - big mess). I sure hope this stands up because I love the look. I recommend it. And no smell at all after it dries (same day!)

In my experience, standard oil-modified polyurethane wears better, and it certainly costs a lot less. The downsides are slow drying, smell and ambering. As much as I like oil poly, I feel Weathered Oak would turn yellow over time if you use it. We used to recoat a salon floor regularly. At a seminar I asked an expert if he had any recommendations for a finish that would wear better than Traffic. He recommended oil poly and said it wears better than any of the top shelf waterborne urethanes, even the one his company sold. Unfortunately the salon was in a residence hotel and we could use it due to the odor. Depending on your wear and tear, Mega HD Clear might be a viable option for you. It costs about $50/gallon less than Traffic.

I've used Naturale twice and neither customer liked it and went to Traffic. With a very low gloss option in Traffic it seems kind of redundant but maybe I'm just not that discerning. I have some on a floor in my showroom and it's held up well but seems to have gotten shinier over time. What color are they doing for stain?

Using a softer primer is a good idea to prevent side bonding, I have used Mega in the past followed by traffic, although one coat of Mega and two coats of traffic are better, there is no need to use two. Bona would say to use their primer although the normal Bona primer is a low quality, soft, cheap low PU / high Acrylate co polymer. This is remedied now by the release of Bona UX which is a harder, easier to sand primer and probably slightly better than Mega to use as a first coat. As James said, HD is not a ceramic finish, simply a 100% PU - isocyanate hardener cross linking product. HD is probably the best finish with the fastest curing.
