Well that means that they're survivors in your zone. And possibly somewhat invasive (if they seed). I do believe the species is listed as invasive in some areas (don't remember which). I do grow it ;)

Yep I believe Stax got it right. Very predictable when you can see the beetle's backs on the surface when concrete is poured. Take's about 17 years before they pop themselves loose leaving hole behind. Where did they come from and what can be done to prevent it? After concrete is level with forms, run a "jitterbug"across the intire surface to drive beetle backs below surface before trowling. In these times of slam-bam cortractors and lazy labors they add water making concrete easy to trowel. All the beetles and aggerate settle to bottom through the soupy mess so jitterbug isn't needed. That's great,right? Wrong. The beetles and aggerate is supposed to be evenly distrubited from top to bottom to make concrete strong, settling out make;s it weak and prone to cracking.
