What angle should crown molding be for this window trim?

I want to add 3.5” crown molding on top of this window trim. I can’t do a 45 degree angle because the corner of the trim will crash into the wall. What other options do I have?

I have no idea what you are doing and what is that fancy caarved trim for ? If you want a trim piece at the top of the window that is okay but that carved trim is not okay where you are using it.

Patricia: It's called egg and dart. I agree that its use here is inappropriate.

As TSG said two of the options are to incorporate the transition, or hide it. Ceiling, Trim & Crown Molding.. Should the color match?

We always put some sort of color on the ceilings but it's always light. In 3 rooms we used the same wall shade on the ceiling.. light gray, vanilla latte & a grayish green. I've found the vanilla latte (Glidden) is a good ceiling color and have used it in other rooms. In our dining room we used a Behr color called French Bread on the ceiling, then a custom color on the walls with a green crown molding. Our bedroom is the only room with a lighter color crown & molding but the paint is darker. I think it's a matter of preference. You have to find what works for you.

Yes, the easiest way is to use the same paint color on the ceiling as the trim. However, the sheen for the ceiling should be flat while trim is better in a semi-gloss

It seems to replace creaftsman hand carved wood. Nice thought but I agree the application is off.

I wanted to carve trim in an older home I had once. Even joined a wood carving group to learn but my job took me elsewhere.

Not quite clear on where you are trying to place the trim. Crown molding goes along the top of the wall where it meets the ceiling. I don't think that's what you mean. Can you show the placement you are trying to achieve?

A plinth block is used for chair rail or base boards that are not cut at 45 degrees. Maybe that can help. Plinth blocks are also used for window trim.

In a word? No.

Every attempt to marry these to a builder stock routed window casing will be a fail. Trims - right down to the skimpy builder chair rail, require thought to proportion , scale and most important appropriateness.

Don't attempt to turn a Pinto to a Porshe unless you get rid of the Pinto : )

A few pictures of your interior and exterior would get you more help.

Common crown molding spring angles are 38, 45, and 52 degrees. If a 45-degree angle is not working, go with a 38-degree crown.

I think you are talking about building sort of a window "cornice" around the Craftsman style head casing, like this.

If the butting into the wall is not overlapping too much (like over 1/2") then just cut it off and no one will notice especially if you have other windows with this cornice/cap and besides the hodgepodge of styles will distract from it (fluted side casing with dentil turned vertical and upside down fillet). I believe all the crown at the big box is 45d so you're stuck if that's your source.

Egg and dart would not be used on a vertical surface in any case. I lived in two Greek Revival houses (built c. 1830 and 1840) and they had egg and dart or lamb's tongue moulding as part of the pediment at the top of the major doors and 1st floor windows. It's a Horizontal molding. More or less like this, although my house more strictly followed the Order. It probably sounds pedantic to say the moulding should only be used a certain way, but it really only looks right as part of the proper assembly of pieces.

Usually once you drop the capitals, from the assembly it's less common to see the egg and dart as well and it would more likely a cyma molding which looks a lot like the typical crown molding we use a lot now.
