Has anyone bought appliance warranty from BestBuy, Home Depot or Lowes? Are they better than the ones from those like ABT?

Extended warranties are only worth it if they are sold by the manufacturer. From my knowledge Bosch and Miele are the only two companies that sell extended warranties directly.

With Miele you can purchase an extra four years of warranty for a total of five. This can be done any time before the 1 year warranty expires.

Dealer extended warranties are almost nevwr seviced by the dealer, but by an insurance company. They are in business to make money so have an incentive to NOT repair if at all possible. A manufacturer extended warranty means you call the manufacturer. You deal directly with them to schedule service. If you move within the same country your warranty moves with you.

I did for my Maytag Baravos washer as I had issues with it from day one. It took about 3 months for them to figure out the problem and once they did, I did not have any more problems within the first year. I have had once since then when DH left a nail in his pocket and it got caught somewhere and damaged something. I had renewed it up each year up until this last time - the cost kept getting higher and higher - $250 a year this last time. I have been battling with Samsung over our fridge. We didn't get the extended warranty but I did register it and that gave us an additional 3 months. Started having problems during that time and they did continue to replace parts after that time. However, it never was fixed and now they are renigging on their buy back offer. I have sent a registered letter with all the documentation to the President of the company and will wait another week or so to see if I get any response. If not, I will have to consider taking some other action. We replaced the fridge with another Samsung (may live to regret that) but we did get the 5 year extended warranty from Lowes for $150.00 Couldn't pass that up, even if I don't ever use it, it was a peace of mind issue after all we have been through. Plus, Lowes gave us 10% back because of a small dent in the back edge of the fridge. That more than covered the cost of the warranty. Remember, register your appliances and you will get an additional 3 months - at least with Samsung and GE, you do. Write down the Warranty number they give you - you will need it if you have to use it.

I wouldn't waste my money as I feel that they will find a way to make sure most of the claims are denied. In fact I just received a very juicy settlement check from a class action lawsuit against your very own AHS for denying a claim they should have approved. But I suppose just as many people have had good dealings and feel they are worthwhile sometimes. Your call. FYI in my own experience I have found that extended warranties are not worth it- if brand new appliances are going to fail it generally happens early and catastrophically while they are still under the manufacturers warranty. That new gasket in five years is just SOP maintenance. Research your appliance purchases and each company's claims history and choose appliances that will last and have great manufacturers warranties. I would use that extended warranty money to upgrade to a more durable model and forget extended warranties. If, as the warranty expiration date approaches, you feel the appliance is dicey you will receive plenty of extended warranty offerings in the mail that you can then take advantage of. No need to buy them up front if at all.

New build, buying all new appliances. I'd like those with experience to weigh in on actual use of the various aspects of Lowe's 3 or 5 year extended warranty... Were service calls quick to happen? Were parts available for a timely repair? Were claims easily processed? I have a Lowe's about 35 miles away and am wondering if their warranty would be a good option. TIA

I agree with geoffrey_b. Your question was timely for me as I've been thinking recently about manufacturer warranties and extended warranties after a related question came up in the thread on the Miele induction ranges and also in the thread "stumped on induction." It seems to me that what Pirch's additional extended warranty actually says will make a big difference on whether and to what extent the additional three years coverage will be worth it to you. For example, sometimes an extended warranty or appliance insurance will provide you with a guaranteed repair or full replacement out to six years. Some extended warranties may include damage from electrical surges. (I recently discovered that Miele provides that warranty; dunno about BSH appliances.) The warranty may tell you that If your stove breaks in year five, it will be repaired to full operating condition or replaced with a current model at no additional expense to you. Or, the Pirch extended warranty or insurance policy might provide considerably less coverage than you expect. For example, if your stove breaks in year five, maybe you might only receive a store credit for the current fair market value of your five year old range. Or it might be something else. There might be all sorts of hoops to jump through, as well. Sometimes, store warranties will refund some or all of the extended warranty cost if you do not make a claim (although typically the refund seems to be a store credit rather than cash). Sometimes, you can further extend the warranty if you have not made a claim. This is all off the top of my head. I have no first hand knowledge of the Prich organization. I've only heard about the Pirch showrooms from friends and relatives who live near one. Last I heard, Pirch had expanded from San Diego to Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta. I haven't been any of those places in years, but maybe there are GW members here who live in those areas and can speak to Pirch's warranty policies? BTW, it seems to me that we do not know that "Induction ranges seem to fail at a higher rate" than other stoves and cooktops. That might be true. It might not be. It might just as well be the case that we hear more about induction failures because the appliances are more expensive (viz., "I spent all this money on this induction thing and it breaks down in only ___ years?"). The problem is the uncertainty. That is where the insurance and extended warranty business comes in. Seems to me that the known problems are: (a) that the things most likely to fail are the logic boards that are proliferating through all major brand appliances of every kind; (b) the failure of one board often seems to cascade to other boards in that appliance; and (c) the cost of replacement boards is very high, so high that it may well seem more economical to buy a new appliance than repair the old one when we are paying out of pocket. I ran into this with a GE dual-fuel range a few years back, so I can say from personal experience that the high costs of replacement boards are not limited to induction ranges. To be sure, there is plenty of internet buzz about all kinds of appliances being designed to last for only six to ten years as a result of the drive to lower costs coupled with increasing reliance on logic boards for features and functions. Manufacturing appliances to last longer will simply cost more. So, I would ask myself if I would pay more for a Bosch induction range if it would be guaranteed to last for six or ten years rather than just one, two or three? Again, this is where extended warranties and appliance insurance comes in. Sometimes it seems that manufacturers are shifting the costs of longevity assurance. If you do not buy the longevity assurance from Pirch for the three additional years, then you are self-insuring. Whether that is preferable or worth it depends on the provisions of Pirch's extended warranty. So read the warranty extension to find out what it actually says.

In a nutshell if the store itself does not have a service department, the it is probably best to save your money. The service is performed by a third party and it is not uncommon for people to go weeks or even months without the appliance in question. Add Covid to the mix and it could be a long wait. If you are ok with that then I say go for it. I bought one for an induction range in a rental and It took right at 4 months for them to fix it. By that time I had to buy my tenants a new range and ended up selling the other unit once it was repaired. While it does not hurt to have some peace of mind, the long wait times are a huge turn off and inconvenient.

I'm looking to buy from ABT, a local Chicago area store. They do have a service department, so it would be effectively a service contract.

My hesitation with all these new appliances is their reliability...they have too many features in them. For refrigerator, i am not getting one with a dispenser and will not set up the water line for the ice machine, but compressor is still suspect. For the gas stove, they come with a convection oven fan, which breaks down. Not sure how over the range microwaves will turn out, I am sure they will break down in some manner.

The compressor on my 21/2 yr old LG refrigerator just went out. Have a Lowes extended warranty, took 1 month to fix. Warranty covered lost food and refrigerator rental.

So the compressor went on my 3year old LG refrigerator in July. We have total Geek support with Best Buy which is supposed to cover all our appliances, not technically a warranty but they will come and fix. But LG has been having a problem with the compressor on their refrigerators so they have extended the one year warranty to five years. Geek squad referred me to LG. LG contracts with Sears for repairs and they send the part ahead of your appointment. New compressor arrives, then repair guy who determines that it’s not the compressor but the main board, so he orders a new one. Two weeks later the new board arrives and a different repair guy puts the board in and it doesn’t work. He says new board is defective and orders another. That delivery is delayed for six weeks I assume because of chip shortage, but finally arrives and the third guy came yesterday, put the new board in and it didn’t work. Finally, this guy examined things a little more closely and figured out that a) it was the wrong board and b) it was actually the compressor that was at fault. We still had the compressor that had been delivered for the first visit and he was able to fix it but we were weeks without a fridge. We had to go out and buy a mini fridge just to have a place to store milk, etc. and we threw away hundreds of dollars of food. Stay away from LG refrigerators!

Have used ABT service and was happy with how quickly appointment was scheduled, and service technicians knowledge and skill. Would use them again.

Would not buy one from HD, L, or BB; would consider from ABT, depending on costs.

Heh. I just replaced my useless problem ridden Samsung with LG!

Check your credit cards. I have one that extends all manufacturers warranties by 1 year.

LG offers an extended plan after you install and register your product. Wasnt a bad price but I passed on it.
