Is This A Dumb Idea?? Brick Pathway/Stained Driveway...
Comments (1)I think it's a perfect solution. You can even stain the drive way to look like bricks by using dividers or blocks with the stain on them or some such; can't remember where I saw instructions, but I'm pretty sure it was on a Gardenweb Forum around here somewhere....See MoreDoes paving a walkway mean paving the driveway too?
Comments (12)jakefield - there were some cracks in the driveway that were only going to get worse. I'll be honest and say that it was all a great big want and not a need. But we wanted to redo the yard and I couldn't do that with so much concrete. They had a bunch of different kinds of aggregate and concrete on the driveway and the side of the driveway and down to the public strip next to the street. The ground was starving. We took everything out, rerouted the drainpipes under the front courtyard and into the dry creekbed. From Before/After You can see the two drainpipes on each side of the house, the go to the creekbed which is about 3 feet deep and helps keep a lot of the rainwater on the property. (I'm in northern California.) When we planted, the ground was so dead. Not even any worms when we turned the dirt. It's been amazing to see it come back to life. mariposatraicionera I'm not sure what you mean by the lower part, you mean what goes between the street and the sidewalk? If so, yes, we left that alone. Around here most people leave that part concrete unless they are in the ritzy part of town (which we're not.) haha I don't know how the costs compare to concrete. We paid about $14K but we had a TON of concrete removed from the street front and courtyard and the sideyard and the backyard....See MoreCircular driveway or walkway
Comments (24)With the amount of land you appear to have and the style of your house, a circular drive makes sense. The only question is, will it get enough use to be worth the effort? I do not like the builder's 'keyhole' circular drive. Keep it simple. Branch off before you get to the garage's asphalt pad, go across the front of the house, return to the main drive via what already looks like a cut in the trees. A long slow scenic sweep through the grounds. The long drive in appears to be dirt/gravel so unless you plan on paving that long expanse (a huge expense), a gravel circular drive will be perfectly fine. You can edge the gravel drive with stone or pavers to give it a cleaner more formal look across the front. Keep the circular drive 25' at least away from the house, maybe a bit wider in front for a couple parking spots and put a walkway to the front door from there....See MoreAny idea what might causes these holes in concrete walkway?
Comments (4)Yep I believe Stax got it right. Very predictable when you can see the beetle's backs on the surface when concrete is poured. Take's about 17 years before they pop themselves loose leaving hole behind. Where did they come from and what can be done to prevent it? After concrete is level with forms, run a "jitterbug"across the intire surface to drive beetle backs below surface before trowling. In these times of slam-bam cortractors and lazy labors they add water making concrete easy to trowel. All the beetles and aggerate settle to bottom through the soupy mess so jitterbug isn't needed. That's great, right? Wrong. The beetles and aggerate is supposed to be evenly distrubited from top to bottom to make concrete strong, settling out make;s it weak and prone to cracking....See MoreHU-840490612
