My guess is that it's philodendron Rojo Congo. The philodendron birkin is a mutation of Rojo Congo and it reverts periodically. So my guess is when you bought your birkin, part of it had reverted to Rojo Congo.

regardless of what it is specifically .. if it was growing happily in the media.. light and watering of the philo.. then you already know what to do with it ...

though of course.. knowledge is power.. and hence the name would be of use ... out of curiosity ....

there really doesnt need to be individual rules for every named plant ... you should think of the rules more in line with what TYPE of plant it is.. e.g. its not a cactus... etc ...

dont make houseplants harder than need be ... just water properly.. dont rot the roots off.. and give them appropriate light and you should be all set ...

@popmama (Colorado, USDA z5) thanks, I guess it would have done no harm leaving it alone then. I am an idiot sometimes so I should have taken a picture of the plant when i bought it and posted here. You would have told me before I went ahead and separated the roots and put them in two different pots. I should have left it alone. doh!

I think it's fine to separate them. Now you will have two plants: a Birkin and a Rojo Congo!
