Flooring Remodeling Design Dilemma

I need help on stair/landing flooring

We have converted our attic into a media room and need help picking out flooring for the staircase. The stairs will start from my office which has a wood look ceramic tile. Towards the top of the stairs there is a landing which has a wet bar and then you have to go up a few more stairs to the media room. The media room will have carpet.

I wanted to do LVP on the stairs and wet bar, but the flooring store I went to highly discouraged LVP or wood on the stairs due to the slickness. Also we have dogs that will be using the stairs as well. If we do carpet on the stairs, I assume it will need to be the same carpet as the media room. My only concern with carpet is the wet bar. What do we do there?

Please help!

Use the LVP on the stairs and add a runner. Dogs and people will be happy...

millworkman - Thanks for the reminder! What I'm doing will meet code for rise and run of stairs, which is why I acknowledged that adding 1 1/2 inches to the height of the landing would require adjusting the rise of steps going up and down from it OR removing existing underlayment. Just looking for the least complicated way that leaves the landing structurally competent and I may not have explained very well what I think are the alternatives: (1) add 1 1/2 inches over the existing landing using one layer of ply plus the flooring and adjust stairs; (2) remove top layer of OSB/add one layer of ply and flooring OR (3) remove both layers of OSB/add 2 layers of ply and flooring. At least, I think those are my choices. Any other ideas?

We have a larger entry in live in a area with a lot of rain/snow. We have a good sized area rug in the entry and no issues over 9 years. We do have a carpet runner going up the stairs simply because I like the look and only installed it not too long ago as it wasn't a necessity. Often we use the garage as the entry and there is a long runner in that hallway where we enter there and no issues. We do have a boot tray in winter placed by the door. The front door is used daily to go to the mailbox and when company comes. I would find a great looking indoor/outdoor area rug if you go the hardwood route and are concerned. We have a thick wool rug. Still, no issues at all with the floor. Naturally, it's all personal preference and what you feel most comfortable with.

I thought I would share & show what I decided to do with upstairs landing...my husband said he didn’t want table in front of return vent so I went with smaller table I’m pleased with how it turned out love my new Home Sweet Home pic, put my Mother’s old chair with her throw ( l lost my Mother in Dec. 2016 to cancer the chair is very special to me) loving the new look on my landing. You could try it, but you may have to repair down the road. Those aren't my pictures and I haven't had the exact situation come up which is why I would have to try some ideas to see what worked best. Depending on how the subfloor is made, I might go as far as taking it out so I could extend the landing a bit to ensure a good fit. Since you already have the nosing cut, I'd experiment with raising the riser right there to cover it to see if that looked decent. It is easy enough to get that to look like one piece without redoing the whole riser. Or I would try the strip of wood along the whole length of the step. I definitely cut 2 mitered pieces to play with.

FYI! Not all LVP has appropriate matching trim pieces for stairs and not certain how attaching runner will affect integrity of vinyl. We decided to carpet full width of stairs with no vinyl.

We have LVP on out stairs with a nice matching vinyl stair nosing not slippery at all and certainly not any worse than hardwood. I would do LVP everywhere including the media room where popcorn and drinks will be spilled for sure

The stairs had to be designed with a finish material in mind, to keep them code compliant for riser and run. What material were they designed to use? If you dont know, that probably means carpet. Its the far better choice to muffle the thundering herd on the stairs to a media room.

I would do a fun retro (or encaustic) tile for the bar area and carpet the stairs.

You could get creative in there. :)
