Paint Building a Home Design Dilemma

Help with stain color

Hi All -

I have a garage door and some window lintels made out of cedarwood that I would like to stain to have a more even tone/reduce some of the orangeness. Below is a picture of what I am trying to achieve. I realize that my wood may be a different species and has more knots, etc - but I am hoping someone here can steer me in the right direction of how I may be able to achieve a similar look. My best guess so far is Sherwin Williams semi-transparent stain in Mountain Ash. Is a semi-transparent stain the right way to go? Or maybe a paint wash to tone down the knottiness? Please help! Thank you!

Can we see the house ? I think the color you want will be someting you will need to experiment with to get close . Have you got some wood in the same type so you can test different ways to do this.

The knots in the picture above are what makes it look so good. I wouldnt try to hide them. I doubt you can anyway. If the wood look looks good on your house, then I would just clear seal it in a product that does not turn yellow.

What wood are you choosing? Stain is radically different from wood to wood and what works on maple won't be anywhere near the same on cherry. What you really need to do is to have your flooring professional prepare several samples for you on your particular floor in your home with your lighting. All of that will impact the color that you end up with. That service should have been included as part of his proposal to you.

Use a mix of Espresso (3:4) and Jacobean (1:4). It will be super dark and the Jacobean will keep the red in the red oak under wraps. The Jacobean will also prevent the treads from looking like they are painted black. Where are the red oak treads?

I like the stripped portion. Can you do that and just seal it? What about media blasting it and then sealing? You could go with the cedar and charcoal trend. Stain it charcoal and do all the deck and posts in cedar. Maybe do the screened porch in cedar shakes. Lots of combos to mix and match the cedar and charcoal portions.

I always get a lot of good advice at my local Sherwin Williams store. They have varying opaqueness stains and can probably color match.
