When is a large room too small to be large?
Comments (38)luckygal said: "After looking at the RE listing it's obvious the homeowners cannot really afford this house. The exterior is badly in need of restaining and the furniture in all rooms indicates a low budget for furniture and decor." I'm not sure you can make those assumptions about the homeowners. Those of us on this site are NOT the norm. I grew up with parents that constantly maintained their home. No painted surface ever got to the point were it looked old and worn. At the other end of the spectrum, my DH grew up with parents that only replaced things once they looked like crap or were broken. They had the money, just didn't see the need to spend it until absolutely necessary. I see small and large homes that are immaculately kept and other that are neglected. It has nothing to do with the size or cost of the home, but everything to do with the priorities of the homeowners. Edited to add, that postponing the regular maintenance of a home always ends up costing you more, so it isn't just about not spending the money, the person just doesn't see that they are being shortsighted and that the repairs/maintenance will cost twice as much when they finally get to it. Comments (90)"I see so many bedrooms on Pinterest and Houzz that are inviting , child friendly and lovely. But how that is all brought together in a cohesive look is still a mystery to me. Maybe I’m focusing on the wrong things?" I would caution you to be very careful about internalizing these images you see online. They are highly staged, have a team of professionals tweaking and moving things here and there, tight shots so you don't see imperfections, photoshopping galore. They aren't real life! Where are the science projects? Where are the plastic action figures, barbies, ponies? The sweater that someone took off and tossed on the chair, where's that? I'm 100% certain that no child had any say in a single bit of what is in these inspirational rooms. Are your grandkids old enough to consult on this? Could you ask them what they would find useful and enjoyable? If they aren't old enough to give useful input, they are probably young enough to appreciate a casual space that they don't have to be terribly careful with. I know my own kids love having a chair on their room, they love having the freedom to rearrange and decorate with their treasures, they love seeing photos of themselves with family and friends. Those are the things that make a room feel like Home rather than a picture-perfect photo shoot. Since you mentioned it, maybe you are focussed on the wrong things. Are you more concerned with impressing your children and your friends than you are with making your grandkids feel cherished? Are you putting so much pressure on yourself to create the perfect social media-approved space that you don't have any mental space to visualize the joy your family will feel in seeing you and how happy you will be to have your grandkids sleeping under your roof? Everyone on this thread agrees that the room is beautiful (a rare occurance!) and that all you need is a simple rug, a chest of some sort with a lamp or two, and a bench/chair or two. It's also rare that people agree 100% on what a room needs! So you are very very close to finished here, and once your grandkids come and add their life and luggage to the room it will come alive!...See MoreMy chair looks too small for room.
Comments (6)Adding a lamp, table, ottoman would make the chair look purposeful and add to the overall visual weight of the area. Adding a piece of art there would also help. https://www.houzz.com/photos/contemporary-living-room-contemporary-living-room-philadelphia-phvw-vp~442601...See MoreIs a 10x11 room too small for a queen bed?
Comments (8)A queen bed mattress is 60 inches wide 80 inches long. If the bed goes on the ten foot wall? You will have 30 inches on either side for bed side tables, and 52 inches from the foot of the bed to the opposite wall,......minus the depth of the dresser ( 20 inches ) leaving you 32 inches to walk and open drawers . If it goes on the eleven foot wall you will have 36 inches for side tables, and 40 inches to the wall and 20 to open drawers and pass by: ) It's.....................MATH. Keep the headboard sleek an upholstered, skip a foot board if possible Obviously, I don't know where the closet is, nor any other passage. Make a drawing. Take a picture. Avoid a double. Two people in a double are sleeping in less than crib space, ( 27 inches each ) Which is what happens when two folks share a queen. Each has a long "crib", 30 inches wide. They will be sleeping. Get the queen........No CLUTTER . Best mattress you can afford, good sheets. an assortment of bed pillow, and layers for warmth or less warmth. Good lighting at bed side. CLEAN... no junk in the closet.....no extra anything that doesn't go to the comfort of the guest....See MoreJAN MOYER
