Relocating birdhouse and other questions
Comments (5)It depends on what type/size your birdhouse is if it would be suitable for other birds. Some of the wren houses are awfully small for a Tree Swallow or Bluebird to nest in. Bluebirds need a 1.5 inch hole, swallows prefer that too but can get in a smaller hole. Chickadees also prefer the 1.5 inch hole but can get in a 1 1/8 inch hole. A housewren will enter any size hole, not much deters them except keeping the nestboxes far away from brush and trees. House Sparrows can enter a 1 1/4 or larger hole, you would want to keep them from nesting in your birdhouse. A properly mounted nestbox is mounted on a slick metal pole with a predator baffle and at least 15-30 feet away from trees/fences/brush with no branches hanging over the box. Squirrels and or raccoons can and will get into nestboxes placed in/on trees or mounted on wooden posts. A metal plate on the front is to prevent woodpeckers from enlarging the hole. If the nestbox is mounted properly squirrels shouldn't be able to get to it to chew the opening. Here is a link to "lots" of info about cavity nesting birds..it is a bluebird site but has load of info about all cavity nesting birds and how to attract them and properly put up nestboxes for them.... Comments (1)I was just writing a response to someone else which included a link to staceyneil's MB, and I realized, that that shower may help answer my question. From what I can tell, her trim sits just a tad higher than her toilet (which is what mine will be if I don't move it), and it looks great! I'll also have a handheld with a slide bar, so I think that will make the low placement look more natural, as it does w/ staceyneil's. But to avoid doing crazy-expensive plumbing anyway, I'll need to have the elbow attached up high where the current showerhead is, right? Comments (9)That's exactly what we did in our most recent move. I'm so glad that we did - we were able to get the lay of the land, we weren't rushed, and we ultimately decided to make an offer over the holiday season and got a huge discount over the spring-summer selling season. We could not be happier and we got a great deal. Moving twice was tough, but we only unpacked about 1/2 our stuff during the first move, and a cross-town move is much easier than a cross-country move. Anyway, we had good luck placing our own ad on Craigs List. Homeowners-to-be are VERY desirable tenants, so we got lots of responses from people who probably would not have otherwise considered putting their house on the rental market - sellers who needed a break from a bad market, professors going on sabbatical, and - the one we took - a woman who decided to try living with her boyfriend for 9 months. (It didn't work out, so we even got to terminate the lease early once we closed on our new place.) Good luck!...See MoreNeed advice... Temporary relocation of azaleas
Comments (6)Where are you located? It could have a bearing on what sort of advice you might get. Ideally, heeling them in somewhere else in your garden would be the best choice. However, it is not the only choice :-) In my area - cool, mild temperatures and usually adequate rainfall - you could store them anywhere the roots are semi-protected. I move or cause to have moved a lot of shrubs due to my business and azaleas and rhodies are some of the easiest to deal with. They get watered well first and then the shallow root balls are lifted and loosely stored in big black plastic garbage bags or other size-appropriate plastic shopping bags, with the bag just loosely gathered around the root ball, leaving the top growth free. Punch a couple of holes in the bottom of the bag to provide drainage and stash the plants out of the way where they will be safe from construction activity and away from the hot sun. Check periodically for water - the roots need to stay just moist, not wet. I have successfully held plants in this manner for as long as 6 months....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
