My catnip has bleached out leaves

I've had this potted outdoor plant for a few years. I cut it back in winter and it grows back beautifully except for this year. It's had very little growth and the leaves are bleached out. I am pretty good at spotting and treating all kinds of bugs, diseases and fungus but this has me stumped as it doesn't appear to have any of the above. Does anyone have any ideas? I grow it for my cats and for the beauty of the plant. Help?

When was the last time it was repotted with fresh media? Potting soil does wear out and become compacted and with most popular bagged potting soil mixes, this happen sooner rather than later. Unless it is replaced routinely - in most cases annually - the old soil can impede good drainage and root development and the plant will struggle. Highly textural and more durable custom mixes can last longer but more than 3 years between repots is pushing the envelop.

Do you fertilize the container? Since potting mix contains no nutrients or if enhanced, only limited nutrients, routine fertilization is also required.

All my catnip plants have bleached out leaves. It's normal for late summer/fall. Why do some people here always expect their plants to be unrealistically perfect all the time?

Too much light trace!!! HID lights are powerful---I've used them to grow orchids that need full-sun conditions. The first sign of sunburn is a reddish flush, then you'll get scorched brown patches, then it kind of turns to ash. You can get good books about what plants to grow under those kinds of intense lights, or there is a good "growing under lights" forum on GW. Most hoyas won't be able to tolerate the intensity of HIDs---you would need to move them several more *feet* from the lights at the very least.

I've got one in my front yard that is doing this, while the one in the back yard isn't. I'm fairly certain its just a stress reaction though, as we had a cold snap a few days after I planted the one up front. Since you're a zone above me, I'd wager you've had some cold spells as well. The plant is probably just a bit confused, thinking its fall and is changing colors. Soon as it warms back up and stays that way it should go back to being green again.

Three days ago, I transplanted 15 tall, healthy plants (each a different variety) from 3" pots and into raised rows and full sun. I gave them all a shot of "Miracle Grow for Tomatoes" last night, and this morning the leaves are bleached out on almost every plant. I don't think the M.G. has anything to do with the trouble. Instead, I think the trouble is one of two things: cold damage or sunburn (or both). 1. The temperature dropped to the lower fifties a few nights last week (even though it's June in Missouri). 2. Before transplanting, the plants were in 100% shade for a week. I think the transition to 100% sun might have caused the discoloration. I'll make a follow up post with what eventually happens.

If I clean my floor with bleach water will it bleach my socks out

If you use a solution of 10% bleach....that is one cup of bleach in 10 cups of water...and allow any moisture to dry before walking on the floor, it won't bleach your sox. Perhaps if you use some dry bleach product that doesn't all dissolve you might have a problem, but clorine evaporates with the water and leaves nothing behind. Linda C

a pic is usually suggested ... but i agree with what they said ...

on some level.. you are in denial that it is sept .. .and for most of us.. a hard growing season ... and some things just shut down early some years ...

if you had included big city location ... we might have a better idea of what your weather has been like ...

Thank you for all of the replies. I couldn't figure out how to attach a photo initially but I was able to on this post. I live in Southern California where we basically have no seasons! I tend to think gardengal nailed it. I think it needs to be transplanted. It's been this way all year, not just recently. I do fertilize it but I think repotting is a great suggestion. I don't expect my plants to be gorgeous all year round although they usually are but since it's been this way all year, had stunted growth and no sign of fall in sight I knew something could probably be done to fix it. I've grown catnip for many years and have never had this problem. This particular plant is on its 2nd year so maybe it's just time to buy a new one but I will always try to save it first! If seeing the picture helps, please let me know if you think it might be something else. Thanks to all!

I've grown them in pots, and in the ground and they do much better in the ground. Sorry I was a little off track earlier. I get catnip volunteers, and I usually let them grow. I wonder if they will volunteer in California. It may need a bigger pot. They tend to decline when they are root bound. All my Nepeta finished flowering, and their leaves started yellowing right after.

Thank you Jay 6a - I transplanted it and it was very root bound. I transplanted at the end of last year and didn't think it needed it again so soon but apparently that's why the growth is stunted. I hope it helps the bleached out leaves as well! Thanks for the follow up!
