Did I just ruin my lawn with too much fertilizer?
Comments (25)"tiemco, I see your point on getting any nitrogen off the blades. What is your rational for accelerating so much nitrogen into the soil/root zone? Wont that be detrimental?" No. Sure you are going to get tons of growth, but I'll take that over burn any day. It's about a month early for the spring feeding above the transition zone, so all that nitrogen shouldn't stress the grass too much (not sure where the OP lives), Just be sure you mow often enough to keep it at the level you want. Nitrogen is fairly transient in most soils, so some will leach away as well. Fertilizer burn happens because the fert ingredients are salts, and with only a small amount of water around, like dew, the salts pull water out of your grass, basically dehydrates it. If you give it a good watering you prevent this from happening. "So if I understand tiemco, he is recommending AGAINST the Scott's Plus-2." Yes, I am against Weed and Feed products for a few reasons. They make you apply synthetic fertilizer to wet grass without watering it in. They make you combine applying synth. fertilizer at the same time you want to kill weeds. What if I want to kill weeds in early April? They make you apply weed killer in dry form (liquid form is much better) and to the whole lawn, even if you only have weeds in some areas. It's much better to apply liquid weed killers directly to the weeds. If your whole lawn has weeds throughout, then get the appropriate product (Weed B Gone Max is great for most lawn weeds, CCO should handle the rest) and apply it with a hose end sprayer. If you only have a few weeds in your yard, use a tank sprayer and apply the weed killer directly to those weeds. You will get better results and use much less chemical. Weed and Feed sells so well because most people are gullible and lazy. They want to do the least work possible, and they believe everything that it says on the bag. People see that and are like "All I have to do is one application and I'm done? I'll take it!" The best thing Weed and Feed does is make money for Scotts....See MoreCompost: too brown, too wet, too...?
Comments (4)Even if it's not quite done, it will finish eventually. The final phase of composting is a long tail rather than a fast hot process. Now, if you're needing compost soon and there are wood chips in there, you could add some greens. Grass clippings would be good, high N plus they would help fluff the pile if mixed in thoroughly, at least for awhile until they break down. Don't turn it too much if you want it to stay warm. Usually in spring I turn that fall pile as early as I can, and by planting season (April-May) it's ready to use....See MoreMy Wicking is still too wet!
Comments (13)Thanks for the tips, I repotted them last week into those home made containers. You can't really see from the pictures, but none of them are actually sitting in the water. I specifically made sure of that, it's just the manufacturing process :) I'll have to talk to the maker of those pots! There's the hole the pots sit in, and then there is a smaller air hole for ventilation. The water is "cloudy" (actually brown) from the phyton 27 that I used last week. I'll probably end up replacing that shortly with generic fertilizer water with Physon. I soaked the entire soil with phyton 27 and then let it run out over time, hence the brown discolored part. If it's easy enough to use lysol or some spray for touch up, that'd be great, because it seems the same plants are susceptible, phyton 27 worked for a short while, but not for long unfortunately :( But I ordered a little oscillating fan so that should help. Some are russian, specifically Le Sea of Happiness, Sagitarius Elite, and Amour Elite. They're all from Rob, except two Chimeras I got off ebay, Concord and Yachio Blue (not pictured). Here's the list of my plants currently: LE Sea of Happiness Rob's Fuddy Duddy Funambule Sagittarius Elite Titanic Rob's Astro Zombie Concord Yachiyo Blue Robs Lucky Penny Robs Love Bite Robs Scrumptious GoldenEye Amour Elite Mas Winter Moon Chicago Flair...See MoreNG Impatiens..too wet??..too dry?? too much shade???
Comments (1)It might be that your new guinnea mpatiens need a little more sun. They like the morning and evening sun but not a hot sun like at midday. Combine the lack of sun with the cold and wet and you could have root rot. Now this is a worst case scenario so don't dispair yet. If that's what it is there is no hope for the plant. In case it is isolate the plant because it can spread. In any case I'd give it more sun and see what happens. It may be that is all that's required...See Morekrnuttle
