It's September- How is your build progressing?
Comments (116)Thanks, guys! The beams will span the ceiling, actually, going up from stone column to the long beam that will run the peak of the ceiling, then down the other side of the ceiling to the corresponding stone column. I think we'll just do that in the two places we have columns facing each other. Gets too busy, otherwise. While we're still debating the costs of real wood to panel the ceiling vs. installing engineered hardwood flooring up there, the beams will be fake - most likely from fauxwoodbeams.com . My parents used them, and it's amazing how beautiful they are! nutherokie, it's funny that you asked about interior doors - that's my Waterloo right now! In fact, I just posted a question about options I'm considering here on the Building forum. I wondered if I should cross-post to the Decorating forum? It's a tough call, because anything contemporary is really expensive if it comes ready to install. We're debating ordering birch slab doors, and having our trim carpenter and painter work together to get a recessed dark-stained panel look, w/stick trim in a lighter color. There's a link in the post that sorta illustrates what I'm trying to door, but right now houzz.com is my best friend for interior doors and trim ideas! I can't wait to see the cabinets: we're ordering true European slab doors from a guy in Arkansas, because no one around here has the proper equipment to build a solid wood, truly frameless cabinet door. In fact, I had to talk my cabinet guy into building frameless AT ALL - since the doors are being ordered and adding to the cost, we'll only use them in the kitchen and around the tv in the great room. They're really all one room, so I want to be consistent. But I'm ordering my oldest son's bath vanity online, we're on-site building a more cottage style for my younger son, and I have NO CLUE what kind of cabinetry we'll have in the master! When we start installing cabinets, I've got to post some pics of the ones we lost from the last house - they were so completely customized to me and my DH, we didn't even have the same countertops, door styles, or mirror frames. Just all the same wood matched, and it was stunning. I miss the cabinetry, but I do NOT miss the all-slate floor/tub deck/shower/etc. from that bathroom. Never again w/the natural slate. Here is a link that might be useful: Gotta do it: old cabinets that I loved...See MoreIt's September 2013! How's your build progressing?
Comments (150)Today they started to put the forms up for the basement walls. They'll finish tomorrow and pour the concrete Wednesday. We will have 9 foot walls, 8 inches thick. We were surprised to see that they had already dug the hole for the septic tank and put it in! Loessismore.... your driveway looks alot like ours, what area of the country are you in?...See MoreIt's September 2017: How is your build progressing... ?
Comments (163)Correct, we used the general layout of the previous house I.e. great room and kichen setup and relocated the master bedroom and retained the upper level as was previously done since it was perfect.. The entire goal from day 1 was to have a wide open view of the bay and the only way to get that view was to elevate the house. Here's the actual front elevation and the exact siding color and ledge rock color we are using. 3D CAD drawings are a bit rough. Rear elevation is basically the reverse of the front. Granted it may not be everyone's cup of tea but, it works for us and accomplishes our goals and within our budget which is the most important thing. Not much point in designing something that doesn't work for our taste nor our budget. I've seen FAR and away too many people end up in an incredibly gorgeous house and when you walk in, their idea of a kitchen table is a moving box with bean bag chairs. I don't think so ! Here's ARG's original plan cuts. The first floor has pretty much the same layout with the exception that we moved the Master Bedroom to where the garage is and reconfigured that area a bit. Also the second floor as shown below is exactly the same as it was. That was absolutely perfect as it was. The revised layout has the master bedroom in the front of the house which, typically I would not do for car lights into the bedroom or for privacy concerns. In this case, the master bedroom windows are right at about 15' up and off the ground so it's no longer a real concern. With the change, we started at the left front corner of the house with the guest bedroom and went straight to the rear. Now, the rear of the house is all great room area, dining area with an island and then a second island for prep and then the kitchen....See MoreWhat are you reading in September 2021?
Comments (64)I just finished Sleeping Giants, the first book in a sci-fi trilogy by Sylvain Neuvel. Told in interviews and documents, it recounts humankind discovering that aliens do exist and were on our planet some 3,000 years ago. They also left something behind. It had an interesting set up and was a quick, easy read with enough intriguing plot lines left dangling to entice me to read the next two books (which I've already requested from the library). It's not great literature, but I'd still like to know what happens next. I'm also a quarter of the way into The Near Witch by V.E. Schwab, a medieval-style fantasy tale about witchcraft and missing children. So far, I'm enjoying it. Everything else I requested from the library arrived at once today: Nightb*tch by Rachel Yoder, That Sounds Like Fun by Annie F. Downs, and How Lucky by Will Leitch. As How Lucky was recommended here, I'm starting that next....See MoreKaren
