KBG will continue to fill in if you are watering properly, mowing regularly, and fertilizing. How have you been doing those three things. Maybe all you need is a tune up with those. Weeds from a reseeding in the spring are to be expected. That doesn't mean you have to tolerate them, but if you reseed one more time, you will get weeds one more time. If you do not already have a Weed Hound, look for one at your local garden center. That tool allows you to pluck weeds out of the ground without bending over. Your best weed treatment is as follows: 1. Do not put out grass seed in spring 2. Water your grass no more than once a week but apply enough for the entire week all at once. I call it deeply and infrequently. Watering properly prevents weeds by keeping the surface of the soil dry most of the time. Daily watering will get you weeds EVERY time. 3. Mow at the proper height. For Elite KBG mow at 3.25 in cool weather and raise it up when it get hot. For almost all other grass (common KBG, fescues, St Augustine) mow at the highest setting. For bermuda, bent, centipede, and some zoysia; mow at the lowest setting. Mowing at the right height will improve the density of the grass and prevent weeds. 4. Fertilize regularly. I fertilize with organic fertilizer on the Federal holidays because they are easy to remember. I start on Washington's Birthday (because it happens to fall 3 weeks prior to our last frost date). Then Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. If you use synthetic fertilizers, fertilize after your early spring flush of growth is over. Memorial Day is good. Then again on Labor Day and Thanksgiving. Fall is the time you really want to not miss with fertilizer. With synthetics there is no need to fertilize in winter or the heat of summer. To summarize I would pluck the weeds and follow the guidance above. I've been around here a long time and 100% of what I've written is stuff I disagreed with before I got here. After reading for years I've come to summarize lawn care like that. It apparently really is that easy and works all over. Every now and then someone will post pictures of their lawn after they started following that advice and the results verge on spectacular. If you want to step your lawn up a huge notch, seed a mix of some of the Elite varieties of KBG next fall. Do that every fall and before you know it you will have a Yard of the Month yard. There are too many success stories here to disbelieve. I have a friend who I never expected to take my advice on lawn care. He bought a house in Huntington Beach, CA. The yard was average on the street and had been mowed at the mower's lowest setting since forever. I suggested the 1-2-3 (2-3-and 4 above). He uses no chemicals and only fertilizes with used coffee grounds. Today (a couple years later) his lawn looks like this. For his short street it went from one of the worst looking to the best by far. There are some retired people on his street that do nothing but bleed all day long over their lawns but my friend just waters and mows. He's close enough to the beach that the temp is mostly the same all year long. He has to mow his KBG every week of the year.

hi, i hope i've responded in time... you can still plant your grass seed, i recommend running your hose around the peremiter to avoid hose marks.. i have had good luck with the melnor timers, just not the one with the dial, there is one with a hinged lid covering a keypad. anyway, make sure to water 2x daily, keep seeds moist, moist, moist, until they germinate, then cut watering back about 40% i seeded my new lawn about 6 weeks ago (in zone 9) and it looks as good as sod now. what type of seed are you using? i think fescue is probably best, i had stray seeds growing where they spilled over on to concrete!! anyway, it's very simple, make sure to use NO weed killer until several mowings. you still have time before hotter months for grass to become established. P.S. when raking seed into soil, i sort of quickly "bounce" the rake across the yard to avoid "sweeping" the seed away. this way, the seeds get covered, but remain where they were spread. use about 50% more seed than recommended, this way you will be sure to get good coverage, and avoid re-seeding in a few weeks

Dear bmorepanic, Thank you very much for your inquiry. Yours is a interesting case to say to the least. I am wondering about the shade issues back here in this garden area. Can you give me some more information? If the area is shady, Poa trivialis or Poa supina would be great choices in this area. Both of these are bluegrasses and will tolerate the damp, shady conditions. Please give me more environmental information if this does not help. Mowing so you blow the grass clippings into the street is one of my gripes. I don't know how many times I have seen someone mowing their yard and the road covered with grass. This is completely unnecessary, unless you want your neighbors to know you finally got around to mowed your yard. They could keep the street clean and make no work for themselves by reversing the mowing direction. I start mowing at the street and blow the clippings into the yard. With the lawn mower you have a large "Leaf blower" so any grass that does get into the street can be quickly blown back into the yard with one pass of the mower at the edge of the street. Maybe the problem is caused by State laws (walk on the side facing traffic, etc.) and mower design. If it is then mower designers could easily switch the discharge to the opposite side of the mower deck and solve the problem. Personally I am to cheap to give my grass clippings away. I want every bit of grass in my yard building up the soil. In fact I have been tempted to ask the neighbors who bag their grass for the clippings for some poor areas of my lawn. While I don't have a means of transporting them I am so envious of the piles of leaves in my daughter's neighborhood, as I never have enough leaves for my flower bed. As for blowing leaves into the Street. In some areas that is perfectly acceptable at some times during the year as there is a city pickup of the leaves. Maybe they did not understand the pickup rules.
