I would hang the roman shades about 2/3 up between the top of the window and the ceiling then hang the rod at that height on the triple window wall. Some may suggest hanging the roman shade at the ceiling but I personally think that looks top heavy

There is 17 inches between tops of windows and ceiling. If I did the math right, it would be about 11 inches above the window. Does that sound right? It’s ok to hang the Roman shades that high?

So I align the top of the shade with the rod and not the drape? Good to know. I was not sure of that.

I think the above advice is good. I would not hang them any lower. (I tend to high as high as possible most the time) If you want the drapes just above the floor, make sure that the floor is leveled. (I learned this the hard way. The drapes ended up looking wonky although it was the floor that was not leveled). Also, depending on the fabric, drapes can extend themselves with time (also learned this by experience with my linen drapes). Since then I order my drapes just just barely hit the floor so they cover any unevenness and get a little ‘support’, but as you understand they won’t hang as straight at the bottom when doing this. Instead I have a little ‘bend’ where the drapes touch the floors. Best of luck!

I want drape to sit just above the floor. 3/8 inch? 1/4" would be better.

120” rod for 91” wide window. Sound right? That sounds right. Cover up about an inch of the glass otherwise they look more like wall hangings than curtains.

I would hang them about 1/3 to 1/2 way down from the lowest point. Personally I don't care for the extra wall space under the rod, but it's really a preference thing.

If you can't mount romans inside, I like Beverly's suggestion better.

Thanks. I have casement windows and this is why I’m doing an outside mount. My preference would have been an inside mount but I’ve heard the crank gets in the way. The picture below shows the amt of space with the crank. Are you saying that you prefer drapes on that window? It’s only 20” wide and so drapes would be so much fabric plus it limits what furniture I put in that space.

Double check the weight limit on the rod for that span and be sure it will hold your curtains if the material is heavy. You can probably do just fine if it needs just one support in the middle. If it needs two supports - say on both sides of the center window - then you have to reconsider opening them fully unless you go to a carrier type rod. Have learned this the hard way!

But I need to order fabric now, so how do I measure drapes? Wouldn’t it be easier to hang the fabric at the same height so that I know how much fabric to order? Does that not look good?

Also, the person that will be making the shades and drapes for me, suggested going all the way to the top with the drapes…but not going as high with the shades. It feels too high. Do you agree? Red line in photo indicates where the drape will go. That would be 17 inches of wall space under the bar.

Ideally it should be right on top of the window with flaps at the top sides to hide the gap. While rods should be placed at the same place all around the room, I would just put the roman at the top of the window or you'll need very long flaps or even a valance to hide the long gaps.

Thanks. Ugh there are so many mixed opinions. This is such a hard decision for me. I think I’m stressing out because it’s custom and I’m worried I won’t like it.

I used to be a professional curtainmaker so like to think I know a little bit of what I'm talking about. : ) Personally I prefer the look of the roman at the top of the window rather than even with the rod. You could also lower the rod to make them more even. You might consider paying someone to do some professional renderings for you so you can actually see what it would look like.

Thanks! I appreciate your help. I imagine you probably do know something ;) I really did not intend for this to be such a big deal but as I spend more time thinking about it the more I stress…ha! So right above the window on the Roman shades, you think maybe 3-5 inch?

And maybe 11 inches on the curtain.

Yep, overthinking is a hazard, lol! Sounds like me. : ) There is no right or wrong here. It's purely preference. Either have them at the same height or mount the headrail right on top of the molding and the rod wherever you want. Having them closer together will make no difference.

Most often, when you see photos of Roman shades, they are not fully extended. If you don't have a light blocking or privacy need to drop them down to the sill, then your concern about an inside mount interfering with the crank wouldn't be much of an issue.

I think it's good advice above to pay for a rendering since custom work is pricey.
