Hosta X-Cellent question

This one is new to me this year. There is only one photo of it in the Library, so very little to compare it to. I read that it is supposed to be a medio-variegated, but doesn’t this look a bit streaky? If any of you are growing this cultivar, what does yours look like? (Sorry about the poor quality picture and fallen leaf clutter.)

Comments (5)Not likely to have spread, unless you divided it and then cut into another plant with the same knife/shovel...whatever. I've seen evidence where it was likely spread by a string trimmer, too. HVX has to be physically transfered from one plant to the next. It is possible, but there is no need to panic. Learn about it, be observant, and you'll be fine. A quick google will give you more info than you want to know... Comments (15)Passing the peace pipe to bboy and gardengal48. You both have worthy experience and advice to bring to the table, which we thoroughly appreciate. So no fights! Anyhow, HOSTA Virus X is fairly easy to spot in my experience, there are tale tell signs. Ink bleeding across leaf veins seems to be the best indicator (see pictures in my first post). Yes, environmental (cold/hot/physical damage) issues and even sporting (mutations) could throw one off thinking their plant might be infected - do your research - quarantine and watch the plant, considering testing if a prized plant, otherwise... don't take a chance, get rid of it. Nwnatural, to answer your question.... An infected hosta with HVX will languish and not perform well and some will most certainly die a very slow death. Not to mention how ugly and sickly the plant will look in comparison to a non-sick plant. Thanks for your interest! Azngrnthumbs, yes! please do speak up, whether it be The Home De-POT or Lowes, whatever nursery you happen to be browsing. Talk to the department supervisor if possible, they tend to be much more responsive. It takes a little bit of courage, but you're helping out the garden world. I've heard that Lowes has responded much better to customer complaints about HVX, they're supposed to be investigating their suppliers, much better than Home Depot response. Comments (27)Great pics everyone and yes Paula, you deserve thanks for the A-Z part as well as what's still to come. I'll break the ice on Xs with X-cellent. I wouldv'e bought this one even it didn't begin with X. I love Beilstein Hosta. Yesterday's Memories - I bought this one hoping for a reverse Wave Runner. Perhaps it needs more direct sun, but it's starting to strut its stuff after 3 years in the garden. Yosemite Valley starts turning yellow in early June but really starts glowing in early July and holds its own into early August. Planted in direct sun from about 9:00 - Noon. And I picked up a Z last year, so it's not strutting yet, but I have high hopes for it. Zucchini Fries: Almost forgot, I finally got my Yellow Polka Dot Bikini on last year. I always thought it was identical to Hanky Panky, but didn't look it last year. Not really fair to assess greenhouse stock against my yard so this year should tell a better tale. 2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoI think the other online photos are representative of other stages of growth/maturity. Mine is still young and it comes up with less distinctive markings. I expect it will form a more narrow streaky line as it matures like what I see online. Here's a pic with the second flush forming on June 9th, same plant.
